With every passing FIFA title, there are a handful of revisions to streamline the formula more and make it more appealing. The series is far from what it was ten years ago, and FIFA 23 will try to improve its predecessor again with a new one Ted Lasso crossover with AFC Richmond. The most controversial thing about the annual releases always seems to be the player ratings, which can be underestimated or overestimated compared to their real-world performance. Erling Haaland, Lisandro Martinez, Alexia Putellas and Kylian Mbappé are some of the best players in the world in their respective positions, and while their rating may spark anger, it’s even harder to give a score to players who are completely fictitious.
Ted Lasso has been one of the biggest surprises on television in recent years, highlighting an unlikely coach’s journey to achieving success in top-flight English football/soccer. It’s far from a workplace comedy, though, as complex themes surface and break through the heartwarming facade to provide a show that goes much deeper than meets the eye at first. AFC Richmond, the Lasso coaches team is included in the following FIFA project, and while the ratings of each of its players won’t rival the best figures in the game, they aren’t entirely indicative of the show’s personalities.
Misfit makeup from AFC Richmond
FIFA 23‘s roster of talent, including characters from Ted Lasso goes a long way in satisfying those who have seen the Apple TV series while adding much-needed flavor to the game. The show focuses on the lives of the players Lasso coaches and highlights the strengths and weaknesses that often directly affect their performance on the pitch. Roy Kent is one such man who plays the last few games of his illustrious career. An overall rating of 83 places him in the same category as real talent such as established striker Antione Griezmann, Arsenal superstar Gabriel Jesus and Premier League winning goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel. It’s long-winded, as much of Kent’s story is about his declining ability and coming to terms with the end of his career.
Sam Obisanya, a season 2 star, goes on the opposite career path and quickly becomes one of the bright sparks during AFC Richmond’s only season in the championship. An 81 rating, three lower than Jamie Tartt’s 84, is not indicative of his journey through the show. Tartt is a player who struggles with arrogance, and Roy’s input does well to bring out the best in him, so it’s surprising he got the highest rating given his issues with balancing ego, team cohesion and an abusive father who wants nothing more than to see his beloved Manchester City win. At worst, Obisanya should be in the same group as Tartt, especially given the couple’s rocky relationship in season one.
Ratings are essential in FIFA 23
Where the cast of Ted Lasso fit in FIFA 23 is an interesting topic of discussion, not least because it sparks a broader conversation about the importance of assessments as a whole. It’s hard to justify giving players who play week after week a number that completely defines their skills for an entire year, especially when good or bad form can be so fleeting. However, Ultimate Team relies heavily on it, and ratings are important to the overall progress of FIFAand that for so long.
Ted Lasso in FIFA 23 goes a long way to satisfy fans of both properties, and its relationship with the Premier League further legitimizes its inclusion. However, if it’s going to feature the cast of misfit players, the show’s careful character development should be reflected in the player ratings for the game. Some characters like Danny Rojas and Colin Hughes are well judged for who they are Ted Lassobut others are not indicative of their travels. Ted Lasso is a delightful series, and it’s very satisfying to see the characters in the most successful football/soccer franchise in gaming, but each player’s ratings could use some tweaking.
FIFA 23 launches on September 30, 2022 for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
