The splatoon franchise does not have a playable mascot similar to other Nintendo franchises such as The Legend of Zelda‘s-link. As competitive third-person shooters, each entry offers limited character customization for users to create their own Inkling (or Octoling), adorning unique outfit pieces in the hunt for powerful abilities. While generic renditions of old player characters such as Agent 3 have appeared in the story content, auxiliary characters and NPCs are the face of the series. Splatoon 3 will be no different.

GAMERANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Callie and Marie, cousins who acted as the Squid Sisters and presented Inkopolis News in the original splatoon, are undoubtedly the most recognizable characters. Not only have the duo returned in both sequels, they’ve also appeared as Assist Trophy in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and performed “live” concerts as holograms alongside their Splatoon 2 successors Pearl and Marina from Off the Hook. Today Splatoon 3 Immediately revealed the new band that will be taking over from the announcers of Splatsville’s Anarchy Splatcast: Deep Cut.

Deep Cut: The Big Three

Unlike the Squid Sisters and Off the Hook, Deep Cut is known for its three members. During daily broadcasts announcing stage rotations and Splatoon 3In the recurring Splatfest events, players will be introduced to Octoling Shiver the shark tamer, Inkling Frye the eel master and Big Man the dancing manta – the first non-humanoid character to have a newsreader role. While the series has focused on punk/hip-hop aesthetics since its inception in 2015, Deep Cut seems to add a more pronounced East Asian twist; first appeared in fish-themed kabuki masks and performed Splatfest concerts on festival cars traveling through a nighttime Splatsville covered in paper lanterns with stalls serving dango.

Despite early trailers showing the Splatlands setting of Splatoon 3 somewhere in post-apocalyptic France, the description on Nintendo’s video for the Deep Cut Splatfest song “Anarchy Rainbow” says the popular trio is “deeply rooted in the culture of Splatsville”. While not much has been revealed about their backstories, the Direct promises large-scale paid DLC content is coming Splatoon 3reminiscent of the larger role Pearl and Marina were given in Splatoon 2Octo expansion.

Fans get a close look at Deep Cut members’ interaction at the end of the Splatoon 3 Right when a pre-launch Splatfest World Premiere is announced for August 27th. One of the major revelations, however, is that Inklings and Octolings are using “Sea-Cucumber Phones” in Splatsville, which act as an excuse to give players important Anarchy Splatcast news like map rotations without having to cut to Deep Cut’s broadcast every time. These kinds of quality of life changes will really help Splatoon 3 excel.

How Deep Cut Affects Splatoon 3’s Splatfests

As for Splatfests, three hosts mean that all of these events will feature a competition between three teams instead of two – fitting for the third entry in this franchise. For this month’s World Premiere event, players can choose to support Shiver on Team Rock, Frye on Team Paper, or Big Man on Team Scissors. Splatfests are also split into two halves, with the first featuring traditional four-on-four Turf War matches between all three teams.

The second half of the event, however, shakes things up with new Tricolor Turf Wars, which pits four members of the lead team from a Halftime Report against two members from both opponents. The winning team acts as a ‘defender’ and must prevent the attackers from charging an Ultra Signal in the middle of the multiplayer map. This sends a signal to the members of Deep Cut, who use the “Sprinkler of Doom” to cover extra grass on behalf of the lagging teams. While Callie, Marie, and other NPCs have taken part in story-based battles as part of the New Squidbeak Splatoon, this is arguably the most active competitive content broadcast team role to date.

The Splatoon 3 Direct revealed a lot more information about the 30-minute runtime, with Deep Cut playing only a small part. Still, this trio will undoubtedly become a big name for Nintendo if past groups like Off the Hook are any indication. Time will tell how they stack up against their predecessors, but luckily fans of the series won’t have long to wait for the game’s launch in September and the Splatfest World Premiere later this month.

Splatoon 3 launches on September 9, 2022 for Nintendo Switch. A pre-launch Splatfest will take place on August 27.
