Doctor Strange 2 introduced John Krasinski in a Fantastic Four role, but Sam Raimi’s comments suggest fans may be disappointed by future films.
Director Sam Raimi has shed some light on the decision to cast John Krasinski as Reed Richards for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnesscausing those who made the fancast to worry about his future with the MCU.
When Doctor Strange 2 starring Krasinski as Reed Richards, fans wondered if this meant he would land the part in Marvel Studios’ Fantastic four movie. However, others felt that it was possible that this small role was just a nod to the fans who had long wanted to see Krasinski play the part.
During the audio commentary for Doctor Strange 2, Raimi discussed the fact that so many fans wanted to see Krasinski in that role, which Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige took very seriously. “It’s so funny that Kevin [Feige] cast John [Krasinski] because the fans had a dream about who the perfect Reed Richards would be,” he said. “And because this is an alternate universe, I think Kevin said, ‘Let’s make that dream come true.’ I’ve always really enjoyed all of his performances.”
Fans took to Raimi’s wording, wondering if Krasinski was a serious consideration for the role, or if they just wanted to provide fan service. Since his casting was based on the fact that his Multiverse of madness performance was in “an alternate universe”, fans are beginning to wonder if he will return for an Earth-616 performance as Richards. “Sam Raimi said he’s John Krasinski’s Reed Richards in… Multiverse of madness because the fans wanted it? But he literally took the thing we asked for and killed it with just five minutes of screen time if that was the case,” tweeted one MCU fan.
Marvel Studios announced their plans to release a new Fantastic four movie back in December 2020, but the movie still doesn’t have a release date or main cast of characters. It appears that Marvel Studios is still in the early development phase of the project, especially now that Jon Watts has stopped directing the reboot. While Marvel Studios announced their plans to host a panel at San Diego Comic-Con next month, fans think it’s highly unlikely that enough progress has been made on the subject. Fantastic four movie to announce something else. However, this doesn’t stop fans from checking out the news of the events, if only to see Marvel Studios change their mind on the Krasinski front.
During Doctor Strange 2‘s run in theaters, fans were overjoyed that Krasinski appeared as Illuminati member Mister Fantastic. While his character was short-lived (and may have contributed to Black Bolt’s death), fans were happy to have their voices heard. Fan edits and deep forgeries of Krasinski like Richards have been around for years, and only grew as Marvel Studios announced their plans to launch a new Fantastic four redo. While Krasinski’s future with the MCU remains unknown, many fans are happy to have at least gotten a full-screen version of him in the iconic suit.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is now streaming on Disney Plus.
