Kate Herron, the acclaimed director of Loki, may be lending her talents to the upcoming Star Wars: The Acolyte series. But is the rumor reliable?

A recent rumor suggests that Loki Director Kate Herron may have been approached to take on the same role in the upcoming Disney+ series Star Wars: The Acolyte. If true, this could mean big things for the new series, especially after how well Loki was received among fans and newcomers alike.

The rumor comes from Making Star Wars, who claims that multiple sources have mentioned Herron as a potential series director. According to the sources, she was, at the very least, invited to participate the acolyte. While this is little more than a rumor at this point, it fits in with other more concrete reports that the acolyte started production in Reading, England. As a British director, Herron would certainly be a convenient choice.

The report also touches on Herron’s connection as a fellow LGBTQ+ filmmaker along with the acolyte showrunner Leslye Headland. Herron talked about it later Loki confirmed the title character’s bisexual/pansexual status, stating that it was important to bring this aspect to the screen as it was also part of the comics. She’s not the only one who sees the importance of expressing that identity, as Headland has also stated her intention to the acolyte to reflect their own Queer identity.

If Herron joins the series as a director, it’s unclear if she will be responsible for everything or if she will be one of many. She could go either way, how different Star Wars series so far have taken different approaches with their directors. Deborah Chow directed every episode of Obi wan Kenobifor example, while the Mandalorian and Boba Fett’s Book divided the duties among many. It may depend on how the story is told. Obi wan Kenobi kept a tight narrative the whole time, so a director made more sense. Meanwhile, the other 2 shows had a slightly more episodic feel, allowing more creative freedom for directors like Bryce Dallas Howard and Robert Rodriguez to let loose.

While little is known about the acolyte, it looks like it will be a little different from the media that Star Wars fans are used to. Set during the High Republic era and taking place over 100 years before the original trilogy, it carries the potential to tell some truly unique stories without feeling the pressure of linking to existing characters and plot points. Will be the first truly mainstream Star Wars project outside of the comics to really dive into that time period, so there’s a lot to be excited about.

Whether Herron will actually participate or not the acolyte, is definitely a project that deserves attention. She has already confirmed that she will not return to Loki season 2, so that means she will likely be free. Furthermore, given the impact she has had as director of Lokiit is quite clear that she would be a real blessing to the Star Wars universe. Along with their proven talent, more LGBTQ+ stories and storytellers are always welcome.
