from the original pokemon games, evolution has been an important element of the series. It changed and expanded a lot with Game Freak adding new ways to evolve and new fan-favorite evolution methods like Mega Evolution, but the concept of evolution itself wasn’t used as much until Pokemon Legends: Arceus.

Pokemon Legends: Arceus shows how ancient Pokémon may have evolved differently from contemporary Pokémon, thanks to the changes of the Era. Voltorb being a Grass-type and Kleavor’s evolution from Scyther show how complicated evolution can be, while theories that all Pikachu clones can trace their ancestry back to an original, perhaps legendary Electric Rat Pokémon were supported by in-game dialogue.

Of course, if this happens to Pikachu, it could happen to others. One pokemon fan, known as alex_fantastico on Reddit, has been exploring how certain types of Pokémon might descend from a singular ancestor. They recently made a dog Pokémon graphic, which is tricky given the variety of dog Pokémon in the franchise, but they also made one for the penguin Pokémon.

This new pokemon The graphic is much simpler, thanks to the fact that there are only three basic Penguin Pokémon. As seen above, alex_fantastico imagines a line of unique ancestral Pokémon with Piplup and Empoleon as their base, naming them Chicyuki, Frostuin, and Emparctic. They look a lot like the standard line, but have icy accents rather than steel. One evolution path sees the ice accents drop, the skin color turns red, and more white emerges until there is only one singular stage at the end: Delibird.

At the other end of the spectrum, ice accents become the dominant feature as their faces are overtaken and grow in body size. This eventually results in Eiscue, introduced in Pokemon Sword and Shield. Meanwhile, Piplup, Prinplup, and Empoleon more closely resemble the basic ancestral Pokémon, only with the change in body expressions, the ice accent being replaced with steel, and the general royalty/color change.

It’s an interesting and believable tree, although it would be more if there were more Penguin Pokémon. It remains to be seen if Pokemon Scarlet and Violet add a new lineup of penguin Pokemon, but it seems unlikely. After all, there are a ton of rumors pointing to regional fakes, new Pokemon, and returning Pokemon, but it’s hard to know anything for sure until Game Freak spills the beans.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet will be released on November 18 for Nintendo Switch.
