Not only is Elden Ring still going strong, it's also moddable, with this latest mod turning The Tarnished into the popular Halo protagonist.
Some games can just never live up to their original hype. Then there is Elden Ring, which is currently one of the most successful releases going right now. In fact, it's gone down as one of the highest rated video games of all time, with a current Metacritic score of 96 on console and 94 on PC. Aside from it offering up another Soulsborne experience for fans of FromSoftware titles, it also offers the modding community a chance to switch things up a little.
As spotted by DSO Gaming, a modder who goes by the alias asmartcowmods has just released a custom add-on for Elden Ring that allows players to take on the role of Halo's Master Chief. As well as providing the player with Chief's armor, it also comes with the Gunnery mod and the Battle Rifle replacement for the M16, which means that this is more than just a model swap. In general, it affords fans the opportunity to jump into the shoes of someone other than The Tarnished.
As well as being one of the most successful FPS franchises in the world, Halo's distinctive protagonist is also one of the most iconic video game heroes ever conceived. The games themselves helped to set in motion the influence of the original Xbox back in the early 21st century. To give some idea of just how much of an impact the series has had on the gaming world, the first three Halo entries are currently in Metacritic's greatest games of all time list, with the first installment at the number 22 spot. For comparison, Elden Ring is currently sitting comfortably around the mid-30s, which is still mightily impressive, especially given that it's only been out for a few months.
Modding is something that has been a staple in PC gaming for many years, and FromSoftware's latest release is certainly no stranger to it. There are plenty of Elden Ring mods out there, some of which can alter up the gameplay by making it a little easier. Anyone who's played the game, or any game from the developer, knows the challenges that lie ahead.
Of course, some people like to make things even more difficult for themselves. Recently, one Elden Ring player beat the game using a piano in lieu of a traditional controller. It goes to show that there are fans out there who are willing to play one of the hardest games around in interesting ways, and installing mods is just one way of injecting something a little different into The Lands Between.
