Florida State is only the second team in Atlantic Coast Conference history to start 0-4 one season and open 4-0 the next. And it’s been nearly 40 years since Virginia’s turnaround in 1982-83.
During two losing seasons under new coach Mike Norvell, there were hard lessons for Florida State with a mix-and-match roster of high school signers, as well as an infusion of talented players from the transfer portal who could be leaders as well as prolific.
There were small steps forward in 2021, including a rivalry win over Miami en route to a 5-7 season, but the Seminoles’ start in 2022 has put them in 23rd place and marked by impressive wins at LSU and Louisville, as well as a Boston College domination last week.
Florida State (4-0, 2-0 ACC), ranked for the first time in four years, now embarks on a daunting three-game trajectory that kicks off Saturday with a visit from No. 22 Wake Forest (3-1, 0-1) . The upcoming slate also includes games at number 10 NC State and then back home for number 5 Clemson on October 15.
Norvell has ingrained a mentality of hard work and preparation on the practice field, a mindset that he believes would put the Seminoles in a position to win games.
Next up is Wake Forest, who controlled the 2021 matchup with Florida State, 35-14, behind an efficient offense and six takeaways. Wake Forest is coming off a 51-45 double overtime loss against No. 5 Clemson, a thriller in which the Demon Deacons traded big plays with the preseason ACC favorite, until they came empty on a fourth-down pass to the end zone.
The challenge for the Demon Deacons is to get back up emotionally by falling just short in a game that was so close to a huge win for Dave Clawson’s reigning Atlantic Division champions.

SEND THE MESSAGE: For Clawson there was little to criticize about the commitment and preparation of his team. So his message to the players after that was to look forward to what they can do next.
“They showed us what they can do and how to prepare and how to play,” Clawson said. “And let’s do it every week. That’s the standard. … I know it hurts to do all that and not win. But if you hadn’t, we never would have had a chance.”
STAY HOT: Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman was great in Clemson’s loss and routinely pushed the ball to the field to attack Clemson’s injury-battered secondary. He finished with 337 yards through the air and a program record six touchdown passes.
The Demon Deacons also continue their trend of strong receiver play. Donavon Greene and Jahmal Banks each had two TD grabs, while AT Perry had one scoring grab and has proven to be a trailblazing downfield threat.
Injury update: Florida State won two games in a row with no standout defensive tackle Fabien Lovett, and he was seen with a boot on his foot before the Boston College game. The Seminoles’ best defense, Jared Verse, and the left tackle, Robert Scott, also didn’t play against BC. Their status for Saturday’s game remains questionable.
AMONG THE BEST NATIONS: Florida State leads the ACC in total offense (503.8 yards per game) and yards per completion (15.4). The Seminoles’ defense is 16th in FBS in pass defense (165.8), and they allow opponents to come in third (38th in FBS) in just 31.2% of the time.
STRIPED SEMINOLS: Since the 0-4 start last season, Florida State is 9-3. The Seminoles are also 6-2 in their last eight ACC games.
