Gundam Evolution of Bandai Namco’s is free to play for PC players, with the developer confirming that the game will be available to console players at a later date, likely closer to late November or early December. The mech-team-based FPS is compared to Blizzard’s overwatch franchise by many for its similar genre and objective-based combat. This is a big part of why some overwatch players flock to the newly released Gundam Evolution about Overwatch 2.

GAMERANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The attention that Gundam Evolution received was largely unexpected by many players, as most Gundam fans are drawn to certain features from the mobile costume genre. For example, typical Gundam games allow players to control a large mech, have a view of the cockpit, and use an intelligent aiming system. While the game is obviously appealing to people who already enjoy the mecha genre, it’s clear that Gundam Evolution is generally made to appeal to FPS players and potentially introduce more people to the community. After all, many of the unique fighting mechanics are already drawing Overwatch 2 players to it.

Gundam Evolution keeps what Overwatch let down

It’s no secret that Blizzard has had troubling issues in recent years, with content droughts, employment scandals and other controversies. Some of the changes the developer decided to make to Overwatch 2 are usually welcomed, such as removing stuns, having a single tank, and a focus on higher damage output. Unfortunately, the recently announced decision to lock new ones overwatchThe heroes behind the Battle Pass, free track or not, left many with a bitter taste in their mouths, as the game was known in the past to rely on counter-picking heroes to challenge a team’s comp.

Plus, quite a few people were disappointed to hear that overwatch Prime’s servers would be shut down when the sequel came out, meaning if players wanted to return to the thrill of 6v6 on classic maps, they wouldn’t be able to. Gundam Evolution could serve as an adequate replacement for the original overwatch for many hoping to return to those bigger team fights, with 6 out of 6 games instead of the 5v5 format Overwatch 2 has switched to.

Gundam evolution has huge potential

While Gundam Evolution has largely flown under the radar in terms of mainstream popularity so far, a few well-known streamers who tested the game over the spring have certainly piqued the interest. YouTuber and Twitch streamer MoistCr1TiKaL was able to run the game in April of this year, after which he rudely called Gundam Evolution the best Overwatch 2 all time,” although watching the game post-launch is the only way to tell if it’s going to be a success.

It should be mentioned that Gundam Evolutionno matter how Blizzard handles Overwatch 2, already has enormous potential for success. The mecha franchise is already incredibly popular, with model kits, anime, and several games to its name. This title, according to Bandai Namco, aims to bridge the gap between what fans of the Gundam franchise already like and something completely new.

Gundam Evolution is its own game after all

The game also features external point-capture maps, such as an engaging destruction mode reminiscent of Bomb Scenario in counter attackor the Spike in Plant/Defuse game modes in Valorant. While Overwatch 2 also has new game modes and maps, such as the Push mode where characters run a robot as far as possible into enemy territory, it lacks something akin to defusing bombs.

Bandai Namco’s new fps is also really different in the overall gameplay style, with an emphasis on directional movement and a bit more of a free-for-all feel, as there’s a lack of shields like Overwatch 2and less focus on retaining teams on bottlenecks. Mechanics will become more important than players charging their ultimate, although this ability is still important and can change a battle when used at the right time.

Gundam Evolution also focuses less on the importance of specific roles for its mobile colors, such as Tanks, DPS, or Supports, encouraging players to pick their favorite mecha instead. Each metal hero is equipped with the ability to deal massive damage, and while some may be a better fit in certain circumstances — like GM Sniper for long-range eliminations — each of them can face an adversary when the need arises.

Gundam Evolution can be played on PC today at 7pm PT. It will likely launch on December 1, 2022 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
