Video games have a nasty habit of putting characters in danger on a regular basis. Whether you’re hunting monsters, slaying gods, or just trying to run and jump to the end of the Mushroom Kingdom, it helps to have a few loyal and powerful allies by your side, and you won’t find anyone more loyal to you than a trusted pet.

While some video game characters keep pets around that stand out most for being loyal, loving, or cute, there are a few companions that are just as deadly as their owners, if not more destructive. Here are our picks for the most dangerous pets in video games.

THEGAMER VIDEO OF THE DAY

7 Cerberus (Hades)

Hades is a game set in the realm of the undead, as you try to escape to the land of the living. It would only make sense that the game would feature Cerberus, the popular three-headed watchdog of the Underworld and the trusted pet of Hades.

Luckily, while you play as Hades’ son Zagreus, Cerberus is just as loyal to you (if not more). The monstrous doggy is cuddly and loving when you approach him, although he does have a bit of a destructive streak, having destroyed the lounge when you learned of your first escape attempt. The imposing dog can also be summoned by Hades during combat under certain circumstances, to show just how violent he can be.

6 Kuma/Panda (Tekken)

Tekken characters tend to go big when it comes to their animal companions. Series antagonist Heihachi Mishima, for example, employs a ferocious grizzly bear named Kuma as his personal bodyguard. This large, heavy bear faces the series’ most dangerous characters as a playable character.

Likewise, Ling Xiaoyu’s pet and bodyguard Panda is, unsurprisingly, a large panda bear. Originally an alternate costume from Kuma’s, Panda is more than capable of holding her own, albeit with a slightly more adorable attitude. These gentle giants are certainly nothing to scoff at.

5 Ikaros (Assassin’s Creed Odyssey)

The Assassin’s Creed series is typically a bit more subtle than most other games in its portrayal of danger. As an assassin, you usually try to stealthily approach your targets, using distraction and environmental advantages to take out enemies. Despite this, your killer is still a force to be reckoned with, and the eagle companions present in more recent entries play a big part in that.

While the eagle-traveling assassin trend started with Senu in Assassin’s Creed Origins, Ikaros took it to another level. Not only can Ikaros explore enemy encampments and bases and help you chart your path of destruction, but the golden eagle can even take the fight straight to enemies and animals, hurting them or even killing them under the right circumstances. The sight of Ikaros spells certain doom for many unsuspecting citizens of Greece.

4 Trico (the last guard)

While many of the pets you find in games are naturally violent and aggressive, some are more reserved and hold back the true nature of their strength and abilities. Such is the case with Trico, the huge griffin-like creature that serves as your companion in The Last Guardian.

Trico is usually depicted trying to navigate the ruins and structures you pull through in the game, with his size usually being a barrier to progress. However, this changes very quickly when danger is present as Trico is more than capable of defending himself as he possesses enhanced strength, speed, healing abilities and even the power to send electric shocks from his tail.

3 Companion Animals (Far Cry Primal)

The Far Cry series is all about providing you with clever ways to take out enemies and wreak havoc in the environment. Often this means getting a variety of companion animals to help you complete your bidding.

Far Cry Primal is arguably the most extreme example of this, giving you access to a slew of prehistoric beasts to wreak havoc. From wolves to bears to saber-toothed tigers and jaguars, there’s a beast for every occasion that can arise in this action-packed game.

2 Dog (half-life 2)

Half-Life 2 introduces you to Dog, Alyx Vance’s mechanical pet. Dog is a hulking mechanical beast, adapted and improved over the course of her childhood by a young Alyx. And while the robot may have the lovable personality of its canine namesake, don’t let the fun of playing with your new gravity gun fool you.

Dog quickly proves his worth in battle, helping you take out waves of enemies as they attack you and your companions. Dog often destroys groups of enemies with little effort, hurling vehicles at enemies and attacking both machine and human. Hey, at least he’s on our side.

1 Pokemon (Pokemon)

While some may argue against the designation of Pokemon as “pets,” it would be hard to discredit the bond between Pokemon trainers and their beloved pocket monsters. Catching, training and battling your favorite Pokemon is a healthy and youthful experience for most, which makes up for how incredibly powerful many of them are.

There are Pokemon that can move mountains, chase your dreams, and even bend the fabric of space and time itself. In a series where you can turn the true creator of the universe into your battle partner, there is no end to the amount of destruction these adorable creatures can cause.
