Splatoon 3The new story mode has shed light on some of fans’ most burning questions, including the fate of humanity. The focus of the series was on multiplayer combat and Turf Wars, while the ink styling and maritime themes were just typical Nintendo family-friendly dressing. But when the third game of the series was revealed with trailers of a ruined wasteland and an inverted Eiffel Tower in the beginning Splatoon 3 images, it immediately got fans speculating.

GAMERANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

There have long been questions that have happened to man and how the planet came to be the way it is today. Thanks to Splatoon 3’s story mode, Return of the Mammalians, some of these questions have been answered. The Alterna Logs, a series of in-game archive items, explains what happened to humans, how Inkling and Octoling’s lives were shaped, and the origin story behind one of splatoon‘s main antagonists. Log001: The Fall of Mankind

The first log describes an extinction-level scenario that wiped out nearly all of humanity due to overuse of the planet’s resources, accelerated growth, and inaction over climate change. Not all people were killed, with a small fraction surviving in a crater left by a volcanic eruption. This cave provided the people with shelter and a source of sea water, and along with the sea water there was an abundance of marine life that has long flourished without the intervention of mankind. It is clearly no coincidence that squid, octopuses and jellyfish are mentioned in particular in the log.

Log002: The Rise of Civilization (again)

After these catastrophic events, the remaining humans put scientists in charge, which was believed to be the best way forward for regrowth. The new society, designed to sustain itself, was named ‘Alterna’. Some nostalgic scientists have printed various artifacts and monuments, such as the heads of Easter Island, explaining why these items exist everywhere Splatoon 3‘s story areas. The same log also describes how the humans made ORCA, an AI system designed to record all human history and knowledge.

Log003: A new heaven

The third log describes the development and application of liquid crystals using the body fluids of cuttlefish. These crystals can pick up thoughts and feelings from the environment and reflect images from people’s minds. As a result, people fell in love with the crystals and mass-produced them to clad the walls and roof of Alterna to project a vision of the Earth before the catastrophe. The log specifically states that this invention occurred 25 years after he was trapped underground, allowing players to create a timeline of events.

Log004: Last Day of Humanity

After Alterna lived in peaceful prosperity for many years, it seems that history was doomed to repeat itself when the original scientists handed over their responsibilities to a younger generation. Dissatisfied with the confinement underground and wanted to see the real sky, these younger scientists built a rocket to escape Alterna. When the rocket was launched, it set off a chain reaction that overloaded the liquid crystals and eventually destroyed the cave, supposedly wiping out humanity on Earth and ending an era in splatoon history.

Log005: New Intelligence Awakens

When the cave collapsed, liquid crystals fell into the sea – preserving the infused thoughts and feelings of humanity, and were consumed by marine life. Over time, the sea creatures began to evolve rapidly. Parallel to the same evolutionary traits of humans, such as lung respiration and mobility, they soon set foot on land and sought out the Earth’s surface, just as humans had once wanted. The actual timeline for their evolution is unclear.

Log006: The land of a new beginning

The latest official log shows how these new creatures have spread around the world. The crater above Alterna and the surrounding area was called “Splatlands” and set the stage for Splatoon 3. The log also describes how these creatures established new cultures and societies on Earth, with the most intelligent species such as squids and octopuses becoming dominant. It wasn’t until 5000 years later that the first person to become the progenitor of the Squidling and Octoling races emerged, leading to more modern civilizations.

Log.exe: Return of the Mammals

A final log will be unlocked at the end of Splatoon 3’s story, after defeating the “After Alterna” mission, and it mainly explores the origins and motivations of Mr. grizzly. While some survivors went underground, others left Earth altogether and boarded a rocket called Ark Polaris to colonize a new planet. However, the Ark Polaris didn’t get very far before it got damaged and so tried to turn back. Ultimately, it floated in space for 10,000 years until its orbit expired and it crashed to Earth, leaving Mr. Grizz was able to come out of hibernation and try to reclaim the planet.

From the latest log, it’s probably clear that humanity didn’t survive to be adrift in space, but if Mr. Grizz did it, it’s not completely impossible. This may introduce a new potential for the return of humanity in the future splatoon DLC and games.

Splatoon 3 is now available on Switch.
