t-Saint John’s 1, Cal Lutheran 1 (September 3)
The Johnnies and Cal Lutheran played to a 1-1 draw in the first game of the California trip on the UC-Santa Cruz campus. The Kingsmen took a 1-0 lead, thanks to a goal from Igor Lumbrano in the 10th minute, and a 4-2 shot lead at half time. However, SJU picked up the attacking pace, beating CLU 10-4 in the final 45 minutes.

Anderson scored the equalizing goal, his second in as many games and the 10th of his collegiate career, 2:45 in the second half. Senior Defender Sawyer Schugel (Victoria, Minn./Holy Family Catholic) and Hermanson were credited with assists.

sophomore Evan Siefken (Lakeville, Minn./North) made three saves in the tie, including two in the first half.

Saint John’s 2, at UC-Santa Cruz 0 (September 5)
SJU ended the trip to California with a 2-0 shutout of host UC-Santa Cruz on Labor Day. Anderson scored what turned out to be the winning goal for SJU in the 53rd minute, the first shot of the game on the net. Senior Defender’s Header Aidan Becken (Prior Lake, Minn.) bounced off the post to the goal line, where Anderson set it aside for his third goal of the season — one in each of three games (two game winners) — and eleventh of his career.

freshman attacker Cooper Nowak (Princeton, Minn.) finished scoring the game with his first collegiate goal with 8:13 to play. Stark-Haws and Hermanson got the assists. Siefken didn’t get a shot at the net, but earned his first shutout of the season and the fourth of his SJU career.

The Banana Slugs took a 5-4 lead in corners and an 11-9 lead in shots, although SJU found the back of the net on the only two shots on goal of the game.

SEASON OPENING WIN: With the September 1 win over Morris, SJU is now 28-9-4 in its season opener since 1981.

MIAC ATTACKS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Anderson was named the MIAC Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week on Tuesday (Sept. 6) for his three-game appearance to kick off the season. He scored a goal in every game – an equalizing goal and two game winners – as SJU went out 2-0-1 to start the 2022 season. The 2021 All-MIAC first team honorary title now has 11 career goals and five game winners.

A LOOK AT THE PIONEERS: Wisconsin-Platteville (1-2-0 overall) dropped the first two games of the season – 3-1 at the Milwaukee School of Engineering (September 1) and 2-0 at Wisconsin-Eau Claire (September 3), but rebounded Tuesday night (September 6) with a 3-1 win at Carroll (Wis.). Carroll took an early 1-0 lead with a goal in the second minute (1:39), but Platteville tied the game in the 21st minute with a goal from sophomore Trevor Hudson and took the lead 9:07 later with a tie by freshman Alester Dawson. Sophomore Clayton Mobile scored on a penalty kick, 1:11 after the break. Nine of the team’s 10 points and all four goals are due to underclasses (freshmen and sophomores).

Senior Midfielder Drew Engel (De Pere, Wis.) scored what turned out to be the winning goal, his first collegiate score, 6:31 in the game. Junior midfielder Brian Real Juarez (Shakopee, Minn.) sent a cross into the penalty area where the ball went into the air, bounced and Engel headed the ball to the back of the net.

Senior attacker Ryan Erickson (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Eagan) added an insurance goal early in the 74th minute—on a nice left-to-right cross from Popp. Siefken made five saves to record his first collegiate shutout.
