warcraft 3 was the gateway game for World of Warcraft. The players who loved the popular RTS game of the 1990s, and there were many, not only enjoyed their playing time. They also followed a compelling tale of Thrall’s rise as Warchief, the undead of Sylvanas Windrunner, the rise of the Forsaken as a race, and the fall of Prince Arthas Menethil.

Part of the attraction was being able to personally visit the geography of the famous sites that were the setting for these famous campaigns. Some of them were mentioned in warcraft 3 as the locations of important battles or other events that took place in the Scourge campaign as Arthas marched north. There are several landmarks and locations in the Northrend of the World of Warcraft MMORPG that were also featured in the vintage RTS game.

6 The Forgotten Coast

There are several campaigns in The Frozen Throne, and before Arthas goes to Northrend, the players must go through the Sentinal and Alliance chapters. But eventually King Arthas arrives in Northrend and his ships land on the forgotten coast.

The Forgotten Shore is an area of Dragonblight in the southeastern part of the zone and is close to the Grizzly Hills border. Arthas must complete two missions in this area, including driving back the Blood Elves and destroying their stronghold before heading to the pass leading west to Azjol-Nerub.

5 The wasteland of Dragonblight

Arthas landed near the eastern part of the zone and had to travel to the northwest side of it, where Icecrown’s zone and the Frozen Throne awaited him. The fastest way through the zone was through the middle of Dragonblight, a devastated wasteland filled with little more than snow, ice, and frozen rocks.

This is the part of the game that includes an optional quest to defeat the dragon Sapphiron, steal his treasure and bring him back to life as a frost wyrm. Sapphiron was cursed to guard Kel’Thuzad in undead, which is why the player has already battled him as the penultimate boss in the floating citadel of Naxxramus. This dramatic scene, and the march of the scouring army from the forgotten coast to Azjol-Nerub, were featured as part of the promotional material for the Wrath of the Lich King extension.

4 Azjol-Nerub

As soon as the Classic: WoW Expansion is live, Azjol-Nerub can be accessed through two 5-player dungeons, Azjol-Nerub and Ahn’kahet: The Old Kingdom. However, unlike Arthas’ journey, it is not possible for players to use these dungeons as a route between Dragonblight and Icecrown. According to tradition, these extensive passages also extend east into the zone of Zul’Drak.

In the W3 expansion, Arthas is joined by the king of the Nerubians, Anub’arak, as he moves through the vast caverns below Northrend that make up the Nerubian civilization. There are several chapters in the campaigns that include both the Upper and Lower Nerubim realms.

3 Ice Crown Glacier

After Arthas successfully traveled north through the caves of the ancient Nerubians, he and his troops emerged to brave the Icecrown Glacier. Icecrown is designed to house characters in the 77-80 range, the only others being Storm Peaks to the east. The glacier and the Lich King’s vast troops, in the air and on the ground, prevent anyone without a flying mountain from even entering the zone.

This location contains several landmarks that players will recognize from the modern game, such as Mord’rethar: The Death Gate, the Court of Bones, and the imposing face of the Icecrown Citadel.

2 Ice Crown Citadel

The location of the Frozen Throne, the court of the Lich King and the eternal resting place of Ner’zhul, Icecrown Citadel has a whopping 12 bosses, and in the modern game this is an impressive raid for level 80 players. The dark bite on top this icy cake is the chance to take on one of the most awesome bosses in the warcraft universe, the Lich King, formerly Arthas Menethil.

Arthas had to lead his own foray into Icecrown Citadel when he arrived. Modern players might find it a little odd that his final battle is with a familiar face, Illidan Stormrage, the final boss of the Black Temple attack in Outland.

1 The Frozen Throne

Players will not see the Frozen Throne until they enter the dungeon and defeat Arthas for the final time. It’s also not a normal location that players can visit whenever they want. The entire Icecrown Citadel is built around the throne and in Warcraft 3 Arthas had to fight against Illidan Stormrage and his troops to reach it. When he did, he freed the captive spirit of Ner’zhul and merged with it, becoming the new Lich King.

The story continues as the player ventures into the same cold wasteland as part of the unified force that makes up both the Alliance and the Horde. The final attack on the Frozen Throne is led by Jaina Proudmoore or Sylvanas Windrunner, depending on which faction the player has chosen, and this is how the final part of the raid proceeds.

World of Warcraft Classic is available on PC.
