Tinykin sees the protagonist, Milo, return to a mysteriously unpopulated version of Earth from the 1990s, at a much smaller size than he expected. Tiny aliens known as Tinykin are his only hope of solving what happened to him and the rest of the planet.
While well received, Tinykin is a very short game, so you’ll likely be looking for similar and hopefully longer experiences once you’ve beaten it. Fortunately, there are plenty of larger-than-life games with small or shrunken characters, be it humans, insects, sentient toys, or other types of creatures.
10 lemmings
Despite its status as a classic retro game, there hasn’t been a new entry in the Lemmings series since 2006. While not immediately available on the latest platforms, the Lemmings games are available on much older platforms, so you still have a choice of where to play these titles.
You lead a group of lemmings through each level to a goal, giving each different roles that help them achieve that goal. Since each level requires a certain number of lemmings to advance, some are replaceable, although they explode once the requirement is met or time is up.
9 Ni No Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom
Ni No Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom isn’t quite the second title in the Ni No Kuni series, but it does away with the monster-collecting elements of its predecessors in favor of Higgledies. These are groups of small elemental creatures that help the party characters in battle. Combat is also more melee-focused than in the previous game, which focused more on using magical spells.
Revenant Kingdom also adds unique gameplay features including kingdom management and skirmishes. While kingdom management is self-explanatory as you build and manage your own empire, skirmishes are strategic and somewhat tedious battles against other armies. A few of these are required to get through the story.
8 Pikmin 3 Deluxe
Pikmin 3 Deluxe, an upgraded Nintendo Switch port of the formerly Wii U-exclusive third installment in the beloved Pikmin series, is also currently the most easily accessible game in the series. Pikmin 3 lets you explore a planet again, now known as PNF-404, but as three new characters instead of just Captain Olimar from the first two games. However, he still makes an appearance.
Pikmin 3 has a competitive multiplayer mode for two players in addition to the story mode. In this mode, Bingo Battle, each player collects four pre-selected items within a time limit. There is also a co-op mission mode that can be played with one or two players.
7 Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling
Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling is an RPG heavily inspired by the original Paper Mario and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling even has an art style and gameplay reminiscent of that.
What makes Bug Fables different from Paper Mario, as you might be able to tell from the title, is that it mainly contains bugs that make up the cast of characters. For those of you who can’t get enough of the bug-filled RPG, there are a handful of optional sidequests and boss characters to try out.
6 Toy Story 2: Buzz Lightyear To The Rescue
Based on the animated Pixar movie, Toy Story 2: Buzz Lightyear To The Rescue, originally launched for Nintendo 64, PlayStation and PC in 1999, and the Dreamcast in 2000. The game is also part of the PlayStation Classics series, which even more fans to play or rewatch it. Licensed movie games aren’t ported very often, so it’s interesting that the PlayStation version of Toy Story 2 has been ported several times.
In Toy Story 2: Buzz Lightyear To The Rescue, the title character sets out on an adventure to save Woody. The goal of each level is to collect enough Pizza Planet coins by participating in different activities to unlock the next level.
5 Little Big Planet 3
LittleBigPlanet 3 isn’t the most acclaimed game in the LittleBigPlanet series, but it’s the most easily accessible game since it’s available on PlayStation 4 and can be played as such on PlayStation 5.
While Sackboy is still a playable character, the game also features three new playable characters: Oddsockk, Swoop, and Toggle. They all have useful skills that the others don’t. LittleBigPlanet 3 also includes all the DLC packs from the previous LittleBigPlanet titles, as well as a level creator, so there’s plenty of content to play through.
4 Hypercharge: without box
Hypercharge: Unboxed is a first-person shooter currently available on Nintendo Switch and PC. It’s aesthetically similar to games based on Toy Story, in that it takes place in different locations full of toys, and you play as a customizable action figure fighting against other toys. There are also some tower defense mechanisms thrown in for good measure.
Hypercharge: Unboxed also focuses more on co-op than competitive multiplayer. Up to four players can work together to prevent the destruction of the Hyper-core, a MacGuffin that prevents everyone from forgetting the toys, cartoons and comic books they love and fondly remember.
3 grounded
Grounded is a base-building action-adventure survival title and Xbox console exclusive, although it’s also available on PC. You play as one of four characters and must figure out why you shrunk.
Based on movies like Honey, I Shrunk The Kids, and A Bug’s Life, Grounded lets you craft useful items from materials found on the ground or collected from enemies, while ensuring you don’t die of starvation or dehydration. Grounded is also notable for its arachnophobia mode, which can turn spiders into giant round blobs of eyes.
2 It takes two
It Takes Two is the second title from Hazelight, the creators of A Way Out, and is available on most modern platforms. It stars two soon-to-be divorced parents, Cody and May, who have turned into their daughter’s handmade dolls so that they can hopefully rekindle their relationship.
It’s a co-op action platformer with a range of different gameplay elements, including puzzle solving with different skills in each level, mini-games and more – with the two players all working together in some way.
1 The Legend Of Zelda: The Minish Cap
Most recently ported to Wii U in 2014, with a Nintendo 3DS exclusive release for Nintendo ambassadors, The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap sees Link embark on a quest to save Hyrule from the evil wizard Vaati. Link’s new sidekick, a talking green hat named Ezio, gives Link the ability to shrink, allowing him to interact with the tiny elfin Minish.
While Minish Cap is currently only available on older platforms, it’s only a matter of time before it gets ported to Nintendo Switch – or perhaps gets the remake treatment akin to Link’s Awakening.
