PlatinumGames is known for its titles in a variety of genres, from the action-adventure franchise of bayonetta to the nostalgic feel of the arcade-style shooter Star Fox. There is something available for every player out there to get stuck in.
However, one thing that all these PlatinumGames titles have in common is challenging boss battles. These boss battles keep players on their toes and sometimes literally take hours to defeat in the end and have therefore been classified as the most difficult boss battles by the Japanese development studio.
10 Emil – Nier: Automata
Like a secret boss that requires many previous steps before appearing. Emil may not only be a boss that some players miss, but getting the chance to fight him is a real challenge, and it’s not just once.
The first time players are subjected to this smiling merchant robot, the battle can be quite simple; however, the second chance to beat him is much harder. One solution to defeat this secret boss is to kill him quickly before the floating smiling heads kill the player first.
9 Mandler – Sol Cresta
In general, many players would argue that completing each level of Sol Cresta, the vertically scrolling shooter, is one of the hardest achievements of all PlatinumGames titles. Since the player has to dodge for oncoming attacks and defeat the other bosses along the way, many normal enemies can be just as tough if the player is overrun.
Ultimately, though, the final boss is by far the most difficult in the game for humans to manage. Mandler is relentless with his variety of attacks that not only shoot directly into the player’s path but also require them to be aware of where they are on the screen to avoid attacks from the sides.
8 Galenos – The Fall of Babylon
Galenos may not be one of the greatest bosses in The Fall of Babylon, but that doesn’t stop him from becoming quite a challenge for players if they allow him to overpower the battlefield. He can strike with a number of powerful attacks while teleporting to the player to take sharp blows, which, if not dodged, can quickly end the player’s life.
While a player may be able to handle this, the environment in which the battle takes place can be another challenge. Fighting on a stage, this demonic enemy can push the player off, allowing them to easily fall to their deaths; this must be avoided in order to gain the upper hand, and that is just the beginning of the battle.
7 Courage – Bayonetta 2
Though players may assume at first that Valor will be an easy boss to defeat due to his big build and slow, easy to dodge attacks, though this is all a red herring for the second phase of his boss fight.
Again, this second phase is not helped by the environment in which the player has to fight. Falling from the sky to defeat Valor is an epic moment, but once both Bayonetta and Valor hit the water, players will struggle to dodge his attacks as he spawns some new ones.
6 Prince Forks – The Wonderful 101
Forks does not make it easy for players to finish the game. After he improved the story and moved on, everything worked up to that point when his madness finally came to an end, even if he believed he was doing the right thing.
Like the player, Prince Forks can use morph technology to make him and his hundred space pirates use different skills to use against the player. Some of these are easily avoided, while others are quite challenging, such as his unify bomb, which slows the player down and deals major damage.
5 Jeanne – Bayonetta
Bayonetta is not the only Umbra witch with a pitch black heart, as her friend, and in the beginning, enemy, Jeanne is another who can use magic to summon demons to come to her aid. In the first bayonetta title, she faces the player twice, both times as challenging as the other.
The second encounter expects players to dodge not only the demons she summons, but also the massive number of missiles she hurls at them. It can get incredibly stressful to deal with, especially if a player forgets to attack a demon that spawns so it doesn’t hit him later.
4 Aether – Astral Chain
Some of the toughest bosses in the game become available after the last main boss of the story is defeated. Aether puts the player’s skills to the test with this incredibly intense battle against them and the two phases they go through.
Their sleek design allows Aether to be incredibly agile across the battlefield, making it harder for the player to dodge. Not to mention the amount of damage it does through its laser abilities, as well as the variety of different explosions it can cause.
3 Aesir – Bayonetta 2
As is the case with many boss fights in Bayonetta 2, players will have to rely on getting hits whenever possible when fighting Aesir. Since it is both a reincarnation of Loptr and a real god, players can assume that this battle will not be easy.
It only gets worse from there, because when players knock down Aesir’s health, time starts to slow down, making it much harder to dodge the attacks. This battle is also made more difficult by the off-screen attacks, leaving players with little time to react to them.
Not just one of the best bosses in the Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance title, but also the most difficult, this US Senator does more than try to win the election while hiring the player. One of the most intense battles in the game, Senator Armstrong’s punches are brutal as they destroy Raiden’s health bar if not dodged or blocked.
Midway through his battle, players must then complete the painful quick-time events that require the player to have a keen eye for pressing the correct button without missing a beat, while not being distracted by the horrific beliefs he is uttering.
1 Father Rodin – Bayonetta
An optional boss that players can interact with, Father Rodin is available to players who want to test their luck, and they should be warned that it’s not nearly an easy fight to win. Father Rodin’s challenge is how unpredictable his movements are, making dodging between his attacks incredibly difficult.
He also can’t be stunned, so players expecting to defeat this fallen angel should select their fastest guns and make sure to keep them at a reasonable distance to dodge his violent attacks.
