  • Houston’s “Sack Ave.” had its coming out party when the Cougars and Green Wave met a season ago in New Orleans. The Houston defense registered eight sacks. The eight sacks remain tied for third most in an American Athletic Conference game.
  • Houston Defense Lineman D’Anthony Jones became the 10th American Athletic Conference player to produce multiple sacks (2.0) and multiple forced fumbles (2) in a game, against Rice last week. It was the first time the feat had been accomplished since Tulane’s Patrick Johnson (3.0 sacks, 2 forced fumbles) against ECU on November 7, 2020. Jones is the fourth national-level player this season to do so.
  • Houston’s edge defenders have shown that they can become elite to reach the quarterback. D’Anthony Jones is ranked third nationally by Pro Football Focus (PFF) with a 91.4 pass rush rating while Derek Parish is in fifth place (90.3).
  • run back Ta’Zhawn Henry made the most of his opportunities in his starting role. The senior rushed for 112 yards and crossed the 100-yard mark for the third time in his career, last week vs. rice. With 107 yards against Kansas two weeks ago, he became the first Houston to fall back to a record 100 yards since Charles Sims on October 18, 2012, at SMU.

  • Houston will hold its annual Blackout game Friday, encouraging fans to “Black Out” TDECU Stadium. The team will wear white helmets, black jerseys and black pants. A season ago, Houston defeated No. 19/16 SMU, 44-37, in the squad’s Blackout game thanks to a go-ahead 100-yard kickoff return touchdown from Marcus Jones within a minute remaining in the game.

  • Houston is the preseason favorite to win the American Athletic Conference for the first time since 2016. The Cougars are looking for their second American Athletic Conference title and their first since 2015. A season ago, the Cougars set an 8-0 record in league games, marking just the second undefeated conference season in the program’s history.

  • The last time Houston and Tulane met at TDECU Stadium was October 8, 2020. Due to cancellations and postponements due to COVID-19, the game was also the Cougars’ season opener. The postponements/cancellations include: Rice (September 3), Washington State (September 12), Memphis (September 18), and Baylor (September 19). The October 8 start was the last in the program’s history in Houston (previous: September 29, 1956).
  • Houston has won 13 of its last 16 conference openers and is 7-2 in American Athletic Conference openers. The Cougars are 40-18-1 all-time in league openers, including a 15-6 at home. Friday will be Houston’s last American Conference opener before moving on to the Big 12 Conference for the 2023 season.
  • The Cougars have had their share of memorable no-Saturday wins under the lights on ESPN, most notably on Thursday, Nov. 17, 2016, when Houston sacked Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson 11 times, leaving the #3/3 Cardinals, 36-10. In the past 10 seasons, Houston has been 10-5 in games on Friday, including 2-0 a season ago (October 1 – win, Tulsa 45-10; November 19 – win, 31-13 vs. Memphis).
  • Friday marks the Cougars’ 50th all-time game played at TDECU Stadium. Houston is 36-13 (.734) at the facility, including a 23-9 mark against The American.

  • Houston and Tulane will meet for the 27th time overall, including the fifth consecutive season on a non-Saturday. Friday marks the 20th meeting in the past 21 years between the two programs. Houston has won 15 of the last 18 matchups (2003–present).
  • Houston is 8-1 in his last nine home games against Tulane (2004-present), including a 3-1 at TDECU Stadium. Over the last 10 games against Tulane (2011-present), the Cougars have averaged 39.4 points per game, surpassing the Green Wave 394-218.

  • Clayton Tune passed for 288 yards and three touchdowns, including a go-ahead score late in the third quarter when Houston passed Tulane 40-22 on October 7, 2021.
  • With a forced fumble, Marcus Jones registered his third forced fumble of the 2021 season and his career. It was the second game in a row in which he forced a fumble and the first since playing in Tulsa (October 1, 2021).
  • With 18 carries, freshman running back Alton McCaskill IV recorded double-digit carries in four consecutive games, a career high in that category. He also rushed for 70+ yards in his fourth straight game.

  • Be Houston’s ninth in their last 10 home games against Tulane.
  • Move Houston to 41-18-1 all-time in conference openers.
  • Beat Houston to 8-2 all-time in the opening games of the American Athletic Conference.
  • Be the Cougars’ 37th all-time 50-game win at TDECU Stadium.
