New functions
FM23 will likely include an improved match engine
While details are scarce at the moment, it seems quite likely that the FM match engine is further improved in Football Manager 2023. The graphics have been improved in the last few versions of the game and with each new edition we get a little closer to reality.
“We want our game to look like a football game from a certain camera angle: not zoomed in,” said studio director Miles Jacobson. FFT exclusively in June when we spoke to him about the future of the game. “We’re not interested in making the match engine look like arcade football games.”
FM23 sees further updates to the Data Hub
Last time, the Data Hub was a great addition to FM22, allowing managers to analyze the numbers when they want to improve their team. This was just the first iteration of the Data Hub – judging by past features, this could just be the beginning.
Take, for example, the Recruitment Meetings. They have been added to Football Manager 2021evolves with the next edition of the game to become even bigger and more in-depth than before – almost like a cornerstone of the transfer market activity.
It would be very surprising if the Data Hub remained exactly the same from its first incarnation until now. Expect tweaks, maybe even more data to draw from or a more streamlined version of the feature.
FM23 could see tactical additions
Football Manager 2022 saw the introduction of the wide central defender. A specific role only available to defenders in a back three, the WCB is widely used by managers looking to mimic real-life set-ups at clubs such as Atalanta and Sheffield United.
As the game evolves tactically, FM keep up the pace, so don’t rule out adding new roles and positions to the game. Specific press structures could well be added to the game, while the role of the inverted fullback in FM is currently most often used by players on the opposite side of their natural foot – and may not fully reflect current trends in the game.
Tweaks are usually minor with this sort of thing… yet we could see a brand new interface. Check out this space.
For the first time ever, UEFA competitions will be featured in Football Managerof FM23 by integrating UEFA licensed tournaments.
“You will feel a greater sense of opportunity on match days of UEFA club competitions with official branding on a number of pre, post and match screens,” confirms Sports Interactive. “Whether you participate in the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, UEFA Europa Conference League or UEFA Super Cup, you will be stepping into the most realistic match experience to date.”
This is not considered to include the European Championship.
Update women’s football
Women’s football is coming to Football Manager… just not yet.
Now over a year ago, FFT spoke to Miles Jacobson and Chelsea women’s manager Emma Hayes about introducing the women’s game to FM and how it would change the game forever. Some assumed that this new database would be included on FM22 – but with FM23 is about to roll out, we are still waiting. This looks like it is now being set for FM24while Miles explained to us why in July 2021.
“We don’t talk about what we’re working on in the future, never,” Miles told us. “But we have to build that data and we can’t ask everyone to sign nondisclosure agreements.
“Let’s just be honest and honest about what we do and build that network. The different people we spoke to, the first question they ask is about the data and whether they can get it because there just isn’t enough.”
