the most of Final FantasyThe protagonists are dripping with charm and charisma, even if they feel a bit distant at first. Their development through a game’s story will usually cement them as lovable characters, leading to some of the franchise’s better side characters being all but forgotten. However, if they got a starring role, these less popular personalities would undoubtedly shine.

8 AVALANCHE – Final Fantasy 7 Remake

The original Final Fantasy 7 presented the eco-terrorists known as AVALANCHE as minor characters with little influence on the game’s plot, but the 2020 remake gave them much more compelling personalities and motivations. Clearly a lot of love has gone into revitalizing them as characters, so much so that many of the members have been fan favorites ever since.

A spin-off on AVALANCHE could reveal how the organization came to be while also showing how Wedge, Biggs and Jessie managed to climb so high in the ranks. The trio’s fate is currently unknown, so it would be fascinating to see them return as main characters in their own game.

7 Gilgamesh – Multiple Entries

Gilgamesh has played different roles in each of his appearances around the world Final Fantasy franchisee. He has displayed multiple personalities and motivations, but his most memorable image sees him scouring different universes in search of the most powerful weapons.

A Gilgamesh spin-off could finally allow fans to see how he manages to pull off these otherworldly feats, and maybe even show his lust for power arose. Every one of his attempts to locate the famous Masamune has failed, so maybe a spin-off can finally give him what he’s looking for.

6 Ignis – Final Fantasy 15

Ignis is arguably one of the best party members present in Final Fantasy 15 because of his martial arts as well as his cooking skills. He is a dear friend of Noctis who plays multiple roles, serving delicious meals being his most iconic trait.

The Final Fantasy franchise has had multiple spin-off games since its inception, but there is yet to be one that focuses on cooking. An Ignis spin-off could finally reveal how his culinary gifts came about and let the player finally experience the full scope of his approach to meal preparation.

5 Rikku – Final Fantasy 10

Rikku became a slightly more prominent figure in Final Fantasy 10-2, but Yuna’s role as the game’s protagonist sidelined her somewhat. While it revealed much more about what her life was like before the events of Final Fantasy 10there is still much to learn about what drives her.

A spin-off could document her life as a persecuted Al-Bhed and how she grew up overcoming Spira’s oppressive regime. By doing so, the overall story could act as a commentary on racism. While the subject was briefly explored in the original, it can certainly be expanded upon.

4 Shadow – Final Fantasy 6

Shadow is a mystery to most Final Fantasy 6it’s expensive. He shows little interest in interacting with the party during their initial interaction, but later offers his services as an assassin on their journey. Unlike other party members, he will abandon his comrades whenever he feels like it, adding to the mystery surrounding him.

The player will witness brief glimpses of the elusive killer’s past as the story progresses, but he mostly remains a mystery. A Shadow-centered spin-off could document his early days as a mercenary sword, or maybe even reveal how he got his hands on Interceptor, his trusty Doberman Pinscher.

3 Aranea – Final Fantasy 15

Aranea was set to receive its own DLC episode in 2019, but Square Enix’s change of direction led to the story’s eventual cancellation. Fans were understandably disappointed with the company’s decision to move on from Final Fantasy 15 because it meant that Aranea’s story would never see the light of day.

However, a spin-off could finally appease Aranea fans by revealing how she came to be. As a dragoon, she can defy gravity and perform some truly mind-boggling feats, but where did she learn this? It’s likely fans will never know, but it sure would be interesting to find out.

2 Balthier – Final Fantasy 12

Although he claims to be Final Fantasy 12Balthier spends most of his screen time being overshadowed by his peers. He has one of the most emotional backstories of any of the game’s characters, but unfortunately never gets the time to talk about it as much as fans would like.

Halfway through the story, it is revealed that his father made him judge of the Archadic Empire. At this point, all judges are presented as inherently evil entities, making it difficult to imagine Balthier as part of their ranks. A spin-off could follow his time in service to the Archadic Empire and perhaps further flesh out the relationship he has with his father.

1 Auron – Final Fantasy 10

Auron is shrouded in mystery for the vast majority of people Final Fantasy 10. He spends most of his journey through Spira observing his comrade’s actions and offering advice whenever he feels they’ve hit a wall. His quiet and secretive nature encourages players to speculate about his origins, only to discover just how devastating they are.

A spin-off starring Auron could showcase his time as Guardian to High Summoner Braska ten years prior to the events of the original game’s story. Unfortunately, Final Fantasy 10 has already received a spin-off documenting Yuna’s life, so it’s doubtful that Auron’s full story will ever be revealed.
