As part of the D23 event, Disney held the very first Disney and Marvel Games Showcase. The event revealed exciting new games, new features for existing titles and an insightful look at the future of Disney gaming. From Skydance’s unnamed Marvel project to new playable ones LEGO Star Wars characters, the showcase had something for everyone.
Much to the disappointment of some fans, Disney and Marvel have not released any new information about their biggest franchises, such as Spider Man 2, Wolverineand Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. However, information about those titles may be withheld from the PlayStation Showcase later this month. Even without those highlights, Marvel and Disney still had plenty of new games and updates to see at their featured gaming event.
Marvel game announcements
The biggest announcement of the day came at the end of the showcase. Skydance New Media has revealed that the upcoming narrative game will revolve around Captain America and Black Panther. The as-yet-untitled game is set during World War II. While fans in this period know Steve Rogers thanks to the original Captain America movie, the Black Panther name will be held by King Azzuri, T’Challa’s grandfather. Amy Hennig will join forces with Skydance to lead the game’s development, but a release date has not been announced.
Marvel fans won’t have to wait long for their next game, though. After being pushed away indefinitely, Marvel’s Midnight Sun finally has a new release date. The highly anticipated game comes out on December 2, 2022 and debuts just in time for the big holiday rush. Bad news for Nintendo fans: the release date of the Switch version is not yet known. The showcase also revealed that: midnight Sun will receive five short videos that act as prequels to the game, with a backstory for each major midnight Sun character.
One of the other key moments from the showcase was a surprise announcement from Niantic. Popular AR Developer Teams Up With Marvel Games To Bring Fans Marvel World of Heroeswhich looks like a cross of Pokemon GO and The Avengers. There was no announcement of what the gameplay will look like, or how the augmented reality features will play in the game, but the first trailer for Marvel World of Heroes contains people who use the powers of the Avengers. The new mobile game will debut in 2023.
The showcase also revealed a few smaller additions to its game collection. Marvel Snap, a free-to-play card game for collectors, launches next month on October 18 for mobile and PC. The latest trailer highlighted the game’s simplicity and short playing time, a welcome change from some of the other similar games on the App Store. Marvel also announced that Red Hulk will be coming to Marvel Strike Force on Sept 13.
Disney game announcements
There were rumors that a new Tron game was supposed to be announced at the Disney and Marvel Games Showcase, but the reveal left fans disappointed. Instead of getting the full, bloated video game experience, Tron: Identity becomes a visual novel. The new Tron submission is led by Bithell Games, the developer of Thomas was alonea 2012 2D indie game that was a huge success. Tron: Identity will follow Query, which is described as a detective program solving unprecedented crimes. The early look revealed few details, but fans were promised a release for consoles and PC in 2023.
The Disney side of the showcase has announced another new title for 2023: Disney Illusion Island. The 2D platformer features Mickey, Minnie, Donald and Goofy as playable characters, each with their own unique abilities and special abilities. The witty trailer also revealed that the game will support both online co-op and split-screen play.
Disney has also revealed a few additions to its existing games. Disney Dreamlight Valley will add one Toy Story rich, allowing gamers to follow Buzz and Woody in the iconic locations of the films. Disney Mirrorverse will also soon kick off its Halloween season, giving the popular action RPG a dark force to contend with. Finally, Disney Speedstorm receives a collection of Monsters Inc. characters including Sulley, Mike Wazowski and Randall. The racer title has no official release date, but is expected to debut sometime this year.
Lucasfilm Game Announcements
Lucasfilm’s announcements weren’t as robust as Marvel or Disney, but fans still have plenty to look forward to. The showcase revealed the LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga Galactic Editionthose 13 new character packs from beloved . will contain Star Wars stories, including Cassian Andor from Rogue OneReva van Obi-Wan Kenobiand Captain Rex from The Clone Wars and rebels.
Return to Monkey Island also got a fresh look at the Disney and Marvel Games Showcase. The trailer featured new gameplay and revealed that the game will feature a scrapbook of all the events in the franchise’s previous entries. Return to Monkey Island debuts on September 19, which is, fittingly, Talk Like a Pirate Day.
Other game announcements
The Avatar franchise also received a few updates of the upcoming games. The Disney and Marvel Games Showcase featured a very short clip of Avatar: Borders of Pandora. The game was announced over a year ago, but so far fans have had almost no updates Borders of Pandora. Also in the Avatar universe, gamers got their first look at Avatar: Bill. The mobile MMORPG allows players to customize their own avatar and explore the vibrant world of Pandora. Fans will have to wait until 2023 to get their hands on the new title.
First released on the Sega Genesis in 1995, gamers will once again have the chance to play the platform game gargoyles. The classic game from the 90s is getting a visual facelift and will be returning soon. Like many other announcements on the showcase, details were announced about the Gargoyles Remaster were scarce, but fans can expect further updates soon.
