PlayStation 5 users now have the opportunity to experience The last of us in all its glory after the remake hit stores on September 2, 2022. The Last of Us Part IThe series’ release has rekindled interest in the zombie series, with fans eager to analyze everyone from Joel and Ellie to Abby and her allies.
Since survival is the main theme, it’s interesting to see which characters were the most capable in their abilities. These range from fighting, clearing, and ingenuity, and the main cast took on the zombie-infested world and used these skills to their advantage.
10 dina
Dina wasn’t inclined towards the survival aspects of the story in The Last of Us Part II and was content to live in peace. As such, she didn’t have the best fighting skills as she was overpowered by Abby and played the supporting role for Ellie when Dina entered the fray.
In terms of skills associated with surviving the zombie-infested world in general, Dina was able to run the farm where she and Ellie lived. She generally needed others to make it real in life, although that also shows that unlike the rest, Dina was able to live without conflict.
9 Riley
The Last of Us: Left Behind is one of the best video game DLCs, mainly because of the role of Riley. She died at a young age, but was a very capable person, as seen when she navigated the world on her own. In fact, Riley took charge on her adventure with Ellie before the latter got really proficient.
Riley wasn’t the strongest in terms of fighting ability, although she made up for that with her agility. Riley was resourceful in the way she found ways to get out of awkward situations, and it’s a shame she was infected before she could fully come into her own.
8 lev
Lev started out relatively helpless as he was taken care of by his sister and later by Abby. However, he picked up archer-based skills to become much more capable. Lev gave Abby solid support once he got better with a bow and arrow, further enhancing his skills.
He was capable enough to escape his community on his own and prove that he could keep up with the stiff learning curve of having to survive. Lev’s weaknesses were apparent when he faced tougher survivors, as he was easily outmatched and overpowered.
7 Yara
Yara has not been able to show as much as she could have done The Last of Us Part II because her arm was badly damaged by most of the events. Still, she turned out to be a survivor by rescuing Abby from Tommy and ensuring that Abby and Lev could escape before Yara was executed.
In addition, Yara’s abilities were evident in the fact that she shrugged it off with a mangled arm, showing that she would have been extremely proficient had she been in top form. Yara’s young age meant she didn’t live up to her full potential, with more developed characters bringing out the best in her.
6 tess
Characters like Tess are the reason why The last of us is among the best zombie survival horror games ever. As Joel’s partner, Tess was a capable fighter, who seemed to be the more level-headed and more rational of the two. Tess didn’t have Joel’s strength, but she had a talent for tactics.
The fact that Tess survived for decades during the time when the outbreak was at its worst shows how capable she was. Unfortunately for her, she was not as skilled as her allies, as Tess eventually became infected when she was unable to overcome the hordes of zombies following the group.
5 account
Bill’s traps pretty much took on a life of their own, as people who approached his area almost always perished. Bill was a master of traps and snares, having lived through the zombie apocalypse only with supplies he’d salvaged himself.
Bill was also good at fighting, as seen when he helped Joel and Ellie. He wasn’t the best when it came to improvisation, as Bill was afraid to leave his town because of the possibility of dying in uncharted territory. He was a beast in his own yard, but inexperienced in the outside world.
4 Ellie
Ellie is considered one of the best video game companions for her role in The Last of Us Part I, where she even cared for a weakened Joel all winter alone. She became a force to be reckoned with in The Last of Us Part IIwhile Ellie took down Abby’s friends and nearly took out her rival.
Ellie’s clearing abilities were absolutely fantastic, she never had any problems getting past vast tracts of land. She wasn’t the best when it came to strength and combat as she was overpowered several times. But her strategic mind enabled her to take out masses of enemies. Ellie’s immunity to the virus is also something that sets her in a class of its own.
3 Abby Anderson
Abby trained herself in a tank in terms of combat skills, as she could take on multiple enemies at once, even without the need for firearms. She was also resilient in the face of great challenges, unburdened by dangerous terrain and able to dodge monstrous zombies.
She wasn’t completely invulnerable, as Abby struggled to see ambushes coming; she was especially capable when she knew danger was imminent. To her credit, Abby was still able to fight, even in a weakened state, as seen when dealing with Ellie, despite being malnourished in their climactic fight.
2 Tommy Miller
Tommy and Joel are said to be a terrifying duo in the 20 years between the start of the apocalypse and Joel meeting Ellie. Tommy was so good at surviving through brutal measures that he felt guilty about what he had to do. The Last of Us Part II showed how dangerous he could be.
Tommy single-handedly hunted down Abby’s group, killing them mercilessly and becoming a shadow they couldn’t shake. Tommy was about to kill Abby too until Yara stepped in and showed how capable he was. The fact that he has single-handedly raised an entire community is further proof of his abilities.
1 Joel Miller
Joel is largely considered the best character in The last of us for its layered characterization. He was able to live a normal life and become a hardened survivor when the time called for it. Joel kept Tommy alive for 20 years with brutal but necessary tactics, and later did the same for Ellie.
Joel wasn’t even in his prime during The Last of Us Part I, but dodged and defeated hundreds of enemies as they eventually made it through. His scavenger ability meant he never went hungry or helpless, and his fights were diverse in both ranged and close-quarter combat. In the end, Joel was only killed by Abby because he was in a vulnerable position that she took advantage of.
