Older games hold a special place in the hearts of many gamers. However, the nostalgic urge to revisit game classics can lead to mixed results, especially when it comes to outdated graphics and old mechanics.
Whether we’re talking about Resident Evil or online pokerremakes and remasters give the games of yesteryear a fresh coat of paint, giving audiences old and new alike the chance to appreciate what made these old-school hits so special.
Many older games have been revamped in recent years, but many titles still deserve a second release. With that in mind, here are 7 games we’d love to see remade and remastered.
1. Siphon filter
The first on our list is Siphon Filter – a third-party stealth action game developed exclusively for Playstation. The goal was to create a hybrid genre game that mixed elements of espionage and puzzle solving, and the final product was great to play.
The game received a slew of positive reviews upon release, thanks to its engaging gameplay and compelling storyline. As if the great single player campaign wasn’t enough, the multiplayer had some of the best PvP action around. Every aspect of Siphon Filter is executed with near flawless precision, which is a rare quality in modern games.
2. Dino crisis
Dino Crisis is best described as a combination of Resident Evil and Jurassic Park. It’s a survival horror with dinosaurs instead of zombies, and that’s all you need to know to decide if the game is worth your attention.
Survival horror games have become more popular again lately, but there is a limit to how much you can do with zombies and ghosts. The addition of dinosaurs made Dino Crisis unique and in a genre plagued by tropes and recycled ideas, that alone is more than enough justification for a remake or a remaster.
3. Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver
1999 was a great year for video games. Siphon Filter and Dino Crisis came out that year, as did Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver – an action-adventure game with a revenge-driven story of epic proportions.
You play as Raziel, a vampire who is betrayed and killed by his lord, is resurrected by a god and transformed into a ‘soul reaver’, a ghostly creature whose only aim is revenge. It’s a compelling story that captivated many gamers at the time, and we’d love to see Raziel’s story updated for a modern audience.
4. Fallout: New Vegas
Fallout: New Vegas is one of the many games in the Fallout series. All Fallout titles are post-apocalyptic RPGs, so what makes Fallout: New Vegas the most deserving of a remake?
For starters, it was developed by Obsidian Entertainment, a world-renowned studio for its ability to produce deep RPG systems and branching storylines. The game has won several major awards and continues to regularly appear on “Best RPG” lists, and no other Fallout game can boast the same level of reverence.
5. Deus Ex
Deus Ex is one of those gaming experiences that cannot be easily explained. You have to experience it for yourself to know what makes it such a classic, but the blocky textures and clunky UI can be off-putting at the best of times.
It’s a shame, because Deus Ex is easily one of the best RPGs ever made, with a Metacritic score of 90 for critics and 9.2 for audiences. With a remake or remaster, more gamers can enjoy this eclectic classic, which can best be described as a cyberpunk-style RPG-FPS that combines action, stealth and adventure elements.
6. Command & Conquer
When it comes to RTS games, Command & Conquer (C&C) had a big influence on the genre as a whole. It was one of the first RTS titles to hit the mainstream, and its unique blend of live-action cutscenes and real-time gameplay made for an immersive combination.
The dramatic action and over-the-top acting worked in the game’s favor, and it certainly helped that a few Hollywood heavyweights, like Michael Ironside, were included in the cast. RTS games have recently become popular again, so it’s the perfect time to relive the campy but captivating world of C&C.
7. Metal Gear Solid
Metal Gear Solid was released in 1998 for the Playstation. Written, directed and produced by none other than Hideo Kojima, it introduced the world to one of gaming’s most iconic characters: Solid Snake.
The story of Snake is told with a finesse that rivals the biggest blockbusters. It’s a work of art that uses stealth-focused gameplay and thrilling action to tell a complex story, and a remaster would make the strong story shine again.
