Like most digital storefronts, GOG runs several weekly sales. These sales are usually themed to some degree, be it genre, publishing, or celebrating a holiday or event in some country. Since it can be hard to keep up with all these great game sales, we thought we’d make a few recommendations from GOG’s current sales run.
As a bonus, this article includes affiliate links, allowing you to support Niche Gamer while getting a great deal on some great PC games.
This week, GOG is hosting two different sales: one based on 2K games and another that is just a hodgepodge of random games. This list is by no means an exhaustive overview of every game that is on sale, so be sure to browse the sales pages as well.
Here’s a list of 10 great games on sale at GOG this week:
The mafia franchise
2K Games, Hangar13, Illusion Softworks

all mafia games are currently on sale and there are a few options to buy them. Most people generally agree that the first mafia game is the best, although the second one is still pretty good too. In general we pretend Mafia III doesn’t exist, but if you’ve ever been curious about it, at least the Definitive Edition is now only $10.
In fact, all Definitive Editions are now about $10, or $23.99 for the Trilogy pack. Personally I would recommend Mafia Classic though, because it’s the original experience with minimal changes and works great on modern systems. I say “minimal” because there is one big change: all the great licensed music had to be stripped down. Still, it’s the easiest way to get the original mafia game runs on a modern PC.
power of freedom
Irrational Games, 2K Games
$1.24 (75% off)

Another classic game best to buy through GOG is power of freedom. While this old-school superhero RPG from the early 2000s is available in other digital stores, it takes a lot of work to make it work properly. The Steam version, in particular, has a ton of issues that you have to mess around with digging into configuration files and spotting unofficial patches.
If you’ve never played it, power of freedom is a goofy tactical RPG inspired by classic comic books from the Golden and Silver Ages. While extremely dated by today’s standards, it nails the look and feel of comics from the old days, before they got too serious and forgot what it meant to be fun. The sequel, Freedom Forces vs. the 3rd Reichis also 75% off.
Spec Ops: The Line
YAGER, 2K Games
$5.99 (80% off)

On a much more serious note, Spec Ops: The Line is also very cheap now. By now everyone knows all about it Spec Ops: The Line and the plot twists and anti-war messages. Its main claim to fame is that it’s a fairly common military shooter with a storyline that regularly breaks the fourth wall to criticize the genre as a whole. Your milage will certainly differ if it has succeeded in its goal of being a more subversive take on the Modern Warfare clones of the early 2010s.
One of the biggest complaints was always that Spec Ops: The Line was way too expensive for a 6 hour story-driven shooter with virtually no replay value. At the current price, though, it’s worth picking up if you’ve ever been curious.
The BioShock franchise
Irrational Games, 2K Games

Another series that I’m sure everyone who has already played is the BioShock franchisee. BioShock, BioShock 2and BioShock Infinite are all heavily discounted at the moment. These are technically the remastered versions of BioShock 1 and 2, but the GOG versions also come with the original, unmodified versions.
The main reason I mark BioShockOther than being a beloved franchise is because 2K Games recently butchered the Steam versions. They released a random “quality of life” update after complete silence since 2016 that installed a really awful pregame launcher, resulting in a flood of negative user reviews. If you somehow don’t already have these games, the GOG versions are definitely the way to go now.
The outer worlds
Obsidian Entertainment, Private Division
$19.79 (67% off)

I fully admit that The outer worlds is not Obsidian’s brilliant return to New Vegas shape that everyone hoped it would be. My review was one of the lower critical scores the game got at launch, and on reflection I think I was quite generous in many places. Even still, I didn’t hate The outer worldsand even considered revisiting it a few times.
That The outer worlds is “done” and has several DLC packs available, now’s a great time to pick it up if you’ve kept the game on your wish list so far. My more lukewarm opinion seems to be the minority opinion of the game so maybe you’ll find yourself loving it.
Solasta: Crown of the Magister
Tactical Adventures
$15.99 (60% off)

A recent RPG that I have a much more positive opinion of is Solasta: Crown of the Magister. This old school inspired tactical RPG came out last year after a very successful Kickstarter campaign and Early Access release, and is still getting updates and new content.
Solasta: Crown of the Magister is a great party-based RPG that strikes the right balance between classic RPG mechanics and a modern, more streamlined package. The game also places a heavy emphasis on verticality, light, and shadows due to its more subterranean focused environments and quests. The game’s Dungeon Maker also makes sure there’s plenty of community content to keep you engaged after beating the main campaign.
XCOM2
Firaxis, 2K games
$5.99 (90% off)

As for games with tons of mods, XCOM2 is currently less than the price of a fast food combo meal. Like many of the 2K games on this list, XCOM2 needs no introduction. Chances are, if you’re interested in this game, you probably already have it. If not, what are you waiting for? GOG has all the classics X-Com also games.
The GOG version of XCOM2 gets a lot of flak because it doesn’t have a handy mod manager like the Steam version. This doesn’t mean you can’t still customize it though, you just have to install your mods like they used to before Steam Workshop removed everything a few clicks.
Sid Meier Pirates!
Firaxis, 2K games
$2.49 (75% off)

Sid Meier Pirates! came out in 2004 and nearly two decades later, it’s still one of the most immersive pirate games ever made. It’s far from the most in-depth and complex Sid Meier game. In fact, it’s actually very simplistic in many places. However, Sid Meier Pirates! makes up for this with its charming atmosphere, wide open world to explore and the degree of freedom it gives you to plunder the Caribbean’s trade routes.
Space program Kerbel
Squad, Private Division
$9.99 (75% off)

At the other end of the complexity scale, Space program Kerbel. Most people reading this site have probably at least heard of Space program Kerbel because of the insane popularity it had on YouTube at the time, but if you’ve been living under a rock since the early 2000s, it’s a sandbox spaceship game about sending little green men into orbit.
The game instructs you to design spaceships from scratch and features fairly realistic physics. You need to understand the basics of aerodynamics and orbital physics to succeed, but building absurd penis rockets that explode on the launch pad is just as much fun.
blasphemous
The Game Kitchen, Team17 Digital
$6.24 (75% off)

Finally we come to blasphemousa brutal and rather grotesque Metroidvania from 2019. There are many retro-inspired dark fantasy Metroidvanias these days trying to recreate the general feel of a Souls-esque, and blasphemous is one of the better ones out there. It has a pretty solid combat system, some great art direction, and loads of interesting skills and abilities. It has also received many free content updates since it first came out.
