Modifications, or mods, are a big part of the video game community. They can be cosmetic in nature, or can go to great lengths to fix bugs that disturb the gameplay, or like the copy of the new Spider Man video game, ninja turtles mod, just be made to cause amusement; but ultimately there are plenty of titles that many would find unplayable without these fan-made tweaks.
Of course, the idea that a release is unplayable could also be based on the fact that it’s so much better with the mods; going back is essentially stripping the title of all the elements that make it fun. There are certainly discussions about modding in general, but from graphical upgrades to ridiculous additions, players should probably look into mods for these games.
10 Downfall 64 (1997)
doom 64 is an absolute classic, but it clearly doesn’t hold up when compared to the graphics and gameplay of the current generation. There have been a number of official reissues and graphical updates, making this much more playable.
However, the players have stepped up to create their own mods, which aim to continue these improvements and even adapt the story to current gameplay needs. There are mods that actually shift the structure of the story, allowing the story to flow a little easier Eternal doomelements while remastering those tired footage.
It’s fair to say that Skyrim arguably one of the most modified games of all time. The original iteration feels somewhat vanilla compared to what the modding community has been able to achieve with its release; and there are a few bugs that need to be ironed out via these unofficial patches.
But for those who have played the game modded, going back to the original release never feels the same. In recent years there has been another campaign to improve the best graphics of the dated title, although the anniversary edition will likely eliminate some of those problems.
8 Cities: Skylines (2015)
There are plenty of much-loved sim-based games out there, but many players have had to turn to mods to really enjoy Cities: skylines. As the title of the game suggests, gamers are tasked with creating their own cityscape; a city of their dreams.
But the limitations within the sim, from the budgets to the development issues that can arise, ended up being quite a headache. Most players will find Skylines much more fun with mods that take some of the pressure off that fans have plagued, otherwise there will definitely be an insurmountable limit.
7 Star Wars Knights Of The Old Republic II: The Sith Lords (2004)
The Knights of the Old Republic saga is one of the most loved entries in the Star Wars galaxy and the original release was revolutionary in its gameplay. While fans eagerly await the remake of that first installment, the sequel game remains nearly unplayable.
Graphically it’s not much of an improvement over the first and always benefits from mods in that regard. As for the bugs, there are plenty though, with the RPG’s immersive experience being damaged by the number of glitches that can be found. Mods are needed here at every level to make this game possible.
6 Cyberpunk 2077 (2020)
The cyberpunk genre is packed with amazing releases and fans were really excited to see what Cyberpunk 2077 had to offer. But when it first launched, there were just too many issues with the title, which felt like it had been rushed despite the delay, resulting in refunds and apologies from Cyber Projekt Red.
Since then, the game has improved. Graphically it’s pretty gorgeous, but bugs still keep popping up every now and then, despite the studio standing up to make fixes. So while the mods certainly help with the glitches experienced earlier at release, it also made the shaky gameplay experience a lot more fun with wacky and erratic additions. Most players wouldn’t go back to the traditional version of the release with mods ranging from background shifts to AI improvements.
5 Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines (2004)
Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines has a huge following and a very healthy modding community. The game itself is really fun without any changes, but the unplayability is due to a few bugs that cropped up for players that had to be fixed via mods.
There are missions in the title that are nearly impossible for some fans to complete due to glitches that prevent them from making certain moves. Using mods is one of the few options to fix it, but there is a lot of fun to be had with some of the others available on the market.
First launch on the Atari, the ET title based on the film was a far cry from the magic that audiences had experienced on the big screen. It was unplayable in every aspect, from the visuals to the way the game was actually handled. The release is a notorious disaster.
Years later, there have been many fans who have put together various mods to revive the long-extinct project, and they have done admirable job. For some iterations, the alien character is actually the right color and the challenges are much more reasonable to overcome.
3 Sonic Forces (2017)
There are some sad releases from the Sonic series in video game history, but the highly anticipated Sonic Powers was certainly a recent disappointment, and certainly not a good contender for future cinematic adaptations.
From a mechanical standpoint, none of the characters moved as they should, and the title became difficult to master. The less said about some of the creative choices made visually, the better. In the end, a lot of mods were put in that add a layer of life to this unreal creation, adding a bit of retro flare to the release.
2 STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl (2007)
While the title is certainly fun, there’s a reason players keep using mods as they progress through the story. No matter how many official patches are installed, there are always other glitches and bugs to be found in this beautiful title.
Graphically, there are still upgrades to be made, although for its time period it’s quite a visual marvel. But from the perspective of knowing that a gaming session can be uninterrupted from potential problems, the mods are a must-have.
1 Aliens: Colonial Marines (2013)
Consider Alien is such a huge franchise, it seems unusual that more budget hasn’t been put into this video game spin-off. But upon release, it was perfectly clear that there wasn’t enough focus on the game, resulting in a lot of issues and a visual style that didn’t fit the era of release.
Since the release of the project on the market, mods have tried to fix the multitude of errors that can be found in the game. Today, with the right changes, the game manages to fulfill its potential and is a much better overall experience compared to before.
