SteelRising is the latest game from Spiders Games, the same developers behind greed and the Technomancer. Set in an alternate Paris from 1789, the player controls an automaton named Aegis as she tries to stop a mechanical army from taking over the French capital.

The latest of many souls-style games popularized by FromSoftware, those who have enjoyed this title may also like some of the others from the genre that have already been released. And with its alternate history, mechanical creatures, and detailed steampunk levels to maneuver, there are plenty of games from other genres worth checking out that have been able to use these elements effectively to create beautiful and detailed worlds.

Remember Me (2013)

Before they became infamous with the first two life is strange games and other story-based adventure titles, Don’t Nod’s first entered the video game industry with Remember me. Set in a futuristic Paris, Nillin must regain her lost memories and battle the forces of a sinister corporation known as Memorize.

With a new take on the famous city and interesting robot powers blocking Nillin’s way, the game tried to take a fresh look at a familiar location while adding some fun combos and weapons to experiment with that some might enjoy. Hopefully SteelRising will be remembered with more fondness than this game, but those with a Steam account can unearth what is now considered a hidden gem.

Dishonored 2 (2016)

After the critical and financial success of the first game, dishonored 2 would transport fans back to the fictional city of Dunwall while Emily Kaldwin and Corvo Attano must reclaim the throne and restore peace to the nation’s kingdom. With a new playable protagonist, extra powers and new enemies to fight against, the sequel was able to build on an already great game that is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.

With a detailed and unique steampunk world, Arkane Studios’ hit series is not to be missed by anyone who enjoyed the desolate French setting. With hidden details to discover in every nook and cranny, many will enjoy building the world Spiders Games tried to implement in their latest adventure.

Assassin’s Creed: Unity (2014)

It may have started with an initial buggy release, but Assassin’s Creed Unity could sell millions of units. Set during the French Revolution, the assassin Arno Dorian must, with the help of other members of the order, track down the person responsible for this historic conflict.

Being able to interact with the iconic sites and historical figures of Paris during the 18th century was an engineering triumph then and while SteelRising didn’t quite go into the same depth, it was able to use the technology of next-gen consoles to bring the city and the people back to life. Unity’s battles may not be its biggest draw, but its historical world certainly will be for those looking for more French landscapes to explore.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (2019)

After a successful launch and a series of updated relaunches, fans of Star Wars rooted in Cal Kestis as he took on the Inquisitors with his trusty lightsaber and allies. And it’s no surprise that this new addition to the canon will continue its adventures in the anticipated sequel, Star Wars Jedi Survivor.

There aren’t many sci-fi souls-esque games out there, but this is easily one of the best worth playing if fans haven’t already. And with a detailed story woven into it, those who enjoy the mix of compelling storytelling and tough combat may have invested in one of the toughest Star Wars spell.

Bioshock Infinite (2013)

The third entry in the critically acclaimed series, Bioshock Infinite saw Booker Dewitt set out to rescue Elizabeth from the floating city of Columbia in an alternate timeline set in 1912. It’s a dark and mature game that is still considered by many to be one of the best first-person shooters of all time.

This is a city worth exploring to see how much detail has gone into making it, which some should consider despite being a completely different genre. And with robot threats poised to shoot Dewitt down, it shares some interesting strategies for taking them down that those looking for similar gameplay approaches may appreciate.

Code vein (2019)

Bandai Namco finally jumped on board with the popularity of the souls-esque games and created Code vein. But unlike other games in the subgenre, it stood out visually with its anime-inspired character designs, a ruined dystopian city, and an AI character tagged along the journey to fight the many creatures that roam the land.

Fans of challenging gameplay will enjoy exploring this ruined sci-fi world and the many deadly enemies and characters they will encounter. It also tried to do something different during the time when many developers were looking for a slice of the soul-like pie and offer something unique that ended up making it one of the most underrated Soulslike games.

NieR: Automata (2017)

PlatinumGames always seems to know how to make some of the most chaotically fun action adventure games out there, from the bayonetta and the long-awaited sequel to 2022 Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. Kidney: vending machines is no exception, as an android named 2B must fight an invading alien force that is taking over Earth.

Despite Spider Games’ efforts to create fun and challenging battles, PlatinumGames excels in this regard more than most other studios in the industry and Kidney: vending machines is definitely worth playing for the action gameplay alone. And it also has an intriguing story centered around 2B and the other defensive androids that those who enjoyed playing as Aegis might want to jump in to see what it was all about.

Bloodborne (2015)

One of the best PlayStation 4 exclusive games, FromSoftware’s Bloodborne introduced everyone to Yharnam, a desolate and dilapidated Gothic city filled with deranged people and nightmarish creatures. While there are no plans for a sequel, many fell in love with the dark and twisted world the developers created.

At the start of the game, players must choose one weapon to use, each with a major influence on the gameplay style for the rest of the playthrough. While SteelRising let players switch any weapon to experiment with, they too can greatly change the combat from person to person and some who are looking for a challenge might like it Bloodborneweapon choices.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (2019)

Following the success of Bloodborne, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice introduced everyone to Wolf, a shinobi with a magical prosthetic arm who must fight and make his way through castles and fortresses to save Kuro during Japan’s Sengoku period. With a new protagonist and his unique abilities, it opened up the battle and world exploration that FromSoftware fans could only dream of.

One of these new gameplay features was the grapple hook skill that those who loved playing Aegis would want to try as players can swing from the roof to the mountain tops. And the Japanese-inspired game also uses the grappling mechanic in combat as much as it does for travel, using it in an effective way that many players will hopefully enjoy.

Elden Ring (2022)

Released earlier this year, Elden Ring became a huge success among gamers and critics, selling over 16 million copies this summer. As you set foot in the Lands Between, it’s up to gamers to take on the deadly enemies that roam the perilous open-world environment to become the next Elden Lord.

Anyone who likes pathetic games should play this as it is not considered by many to be the best in this action category either, but the best game FromSoftware has ever made. SteelRising may grab the attention of fans of these types of video games, but this is definitely one that no one who has enjoyed it should miss.
