This week is the first game from Crea-Ture Studios, Session: Skate Sim, which looks set to become the next big skateboard video game as it promises a realistic approach to the sport. By creating iconic locations known to the skate community and customizing the avatar and board of recognizable brands, it could also be a contender as one of the best sports games of the year.


But those looking for other skateboarding titles will be in luck, as there have been several attempts by developers over the years to bring a realistic approach to gameplay across multiple consoles and devices. There have also been those who have rocked the genre and tried to bring something new to the disaster that could be a good palette cleanser in between these titles.

VR skater (2021)

Many developers have tried to use VR to create immersive experiences that can’t be replicated with a traditional video game setup, and some have managed to surpass it in spades. One is DEFICIT Games’ VR skater where skaters could play in a virtual space with the Oculus Quest Two.

Despite being in early access on Steam, the game currently has a 9/10, with much praise for the controls online. OlliOlli: Epic Combo Edition (2014)

The side-scrolling skate games have been repackaged for the PS4 with additional features that will be a refreshing break from realistic skating in favor of the game’s wonderful mix of combo-building and platforming. The Slope (2022)

Not all games have to be complicated or feature a lot of features to stand out, as long as it embraces what it is. The hill is one such game that takes away modes, scoring system, and unlockable items in favor of a fun and simple game where players just skate on different ramps.

It may not be heavy on content, but it’s a game built to be a relaxing and enjoyable experience whether you’re on the go with the Nintendo Switch or at home on PCs. Released earlier this year, it just goes to show that after many skate games before it, this and Session: Skate Sim still something new on the table.

Illusion Labs is responsible for developing many types of games for the mobile market, whether exclusive to Apple Arcade Away from the turtle or their countless sports games on the App Store and Google Play. Available for multiple consoles, PC and Apple Arcade, Skate City received positive reviews as players could share their own customizable videos and showcase their skills. Real Ice Skate (2012)

Not many skateboarding games can say that these are the official titles for a tournament series, but Street League Skateboarding has just that with real skate. Released for iOS and Android devices, it still gets updates since its launch in 2012 to offer more content to reward its devoted players.

With similar gameplay to other mobile skate games like Touch Grind Skate 2, those who love finger skating will enjoy this and its well-founded interpretation of the sport. It’s another option for those on the go and can’t stop thinking about Session: Skate Sim that they just need a portable option that tries to mimic touchscreen skateboarding.

OlliOlli World (2022)

After the success of OlliOlli and OlliOlli 2: Welcome to OlliwoodRoll7 followed their skateboarding games with OlliOlli World. Set in a colorful and cartoonish 3D world that could easily be mistaken for a Cartoon Network show, players must perform a number of tricks through each level and help characters with quests and challenges.

It was the most anticipated game by some people earlier this year, and it looks set to become one of the best games of 2022. Even with some stiff competition from the fall releases, the game will act as a brilliant outdoor palette cleaner after the many other skate games. At the very least, it will give those who like skateboarding a very different and visually striking landscape to perform tricks.

Ice Skating (2007)

Until the fourth installment is released, newcomers should try to discover the trilogy that preceded it, especially the first game that started the series. Released in 2007 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, Skate tried to compete with the popularity of the Tony Hawk games by focusing on a pragmatic approach to gameplay and creating one of the best open-world games on the PS3.

It may not be the easiest game to access right now, but it was an important part of sports games history and one that would help amplify the more grounded experience in some future titles. Hopefully EA will bring the series back to its roots when the latest game comes out of development for fans to enjoy.

Skater XL (2020)

Skater XL had some stiff competition when it was released in 2020. Not only did it have a plethora of games to compete with, but it also had Tony Hawks Pro Skater 1+2 to fight for the best skating competition of that year. Like the Skate series before it, the title tried to make the gameplay as practical as possible, allowing players to test their newfound skills on the challenges of each map.

A big plus is the mods for the PC version, where players can access more stages and character customization items for more freedom of expression while playing in this expansive game. In addition, it received updates that helped balance the game and introduced new modes to keep fans coming back for more.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 (2020)

In the 1990s, Tony Hawk became a celebrated figure on the sports scene and would become a household name after his gnarly skateboard tricks were televised, leading to the creation of his own video game series. Considered by many fans to be the best of the entire series, the first two games have been resurrected from the PlayStation One and remade for current consoles in 2020.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 bought fans back to the best of the series and introduced newcomers to what made these top sports video games. Those looking for more skateboarding fun should definitely pick up these updated games without hesitation.
