In the fast paced world of video game making, few series have truly stood the test of time. Tomb Raider is one of the rare series that has been consistently released for over two decades.

With so many titles in the series, it might be hard to know where to start. To date, there are 14 Tomb Raider games and two RPG spin-offs. The series has sold more than 82 million copies since its launch.

Between 1996 and 1999, Core Design produced the first trilogy of games. Crystal Dynamics relaunched the series in 2006 after a second trilogy that was less popular.

In this article, we’ll tell you all the Tomb Raider games in order of their release date.

In what order to play Tomb Raider games?

There are a total of 3 sagas in which the Tomb Raider series is distributed. All three Lara Croft sagas should be considered while playing any of the Tomb Raider games. Here’s a full list of all the titles so you can learn about their development from start to finish:

Order of the Classic Tomb Raider Saga

The first of all sagas was the Classic Tomb Raider Saga. This saga started in 1996 and lasted until 2002. Here is a list of all the games in the classic Tomb Raider Saga in order of their release.

1. Tomb Raider

Year of publication: 1996
Supported Devices: PlayStation, Game Boy Color, PC and Saturn

To this day, the original Tomb Raider remains one of the best-selling PlayStation games of all time and was the best-selling Tomb Raider title until its 2013 remake.

2. Tomb Raider II – The Dagger of Xian

Year of publication: 1997
Supported Devices: Classic Mac OS, Microsoft Windows, Android, Sony PlayStation

Tomb Raider 2 was made soon after the popularity of the original game. New weapons and vehicles were introduced in Tomb Raider II, which came out a year after the release of the first game.

3. Tomb Raider III: Adventures of Lara Croft

Year of publication: 1998
Supported Devices: Sony PlayStation, Classic Mac OS, Microsoft Windows

The third edition follows in the footsteps of the original, just like the second edition. Throughout the game, Lara is contracted to rescue four powerful artifacts from an ancient meteorite. Gradually, she finds out why her boss is so dependent on them.

4. Tomb Raider: The Final Revelation

Year of publication: 1999

Supported Devices: PC, PlayStation 2 and Dreamcast

The fourth game in the series, Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation is the first game in the franchise to deviate from the franchise’s storyline and the fatigue started to define it.

The Last Revelation, as you would have predicted, delivered nothing more than the typical technological improvements: improved visuals, smoother gameplay mechanics, and a few new weapons.

5. Tomb Raider: Chronicles

Year of publication: 2000
Supported Devices: Sony PlayStation, Classic Mac OS, Microsoft Windows, Sega Dreamcast

After the events of The Last Revelation, this story is a sequel. A group of friends gather at the Croft Mansion to pay their respects to Lara Croft and reminisce about her early exploits. There are flashbacks throughout the game.

6. Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness

Year of publication: 2003
Supported Devices: Sony PlayStation 2, Mac OS Microsoft Windows

Lara Croft’s journey across Europe to clear her reputation after her mentor’s death was a departure from normal treasure hunts.

7. Tomb Raider: Legend

Year of publication: 2006
Supported Devices: Nintendo GameCube, Sony PlayStation 3, PSP, Microsoft Windows, Sony PlayStation 2, Xbox 360, Nintendo DS, Game Boy Advance, Xbox

When Angel of Death and Chronicles caused outrage, the game’s makers responded by giving it a fresh coat of paint. Three years were spent completely replaying the game and it was a triumphant achievement.
