Grand Theft Auto San Andreas was meant to tell the simple story of a young man’s return home, but has evolved to tell something much bigger. The further CJ delves into the inner workings of San Andreas, the more entrenched he becomes in the world of crime.

Grand Theft Auto San Andreas introduced a number of new features to the series and perfected some of the returning ones as well. Some of the more iconic elements have since been thrown out in favor of new additions, but many fans long for their return. While many ideas have stayed in it to become the core of the franchise, there’s still a chance they won’t make an appearance in the highly anticipated sequel.

10 Restrict access to different areas

Upon returning to San Andreas after five years in Liberty City, CJ discovers that Los Santos is somewhat cut off from the outside world. The bridges to Las Venturas and San Fierro are cordoned off and cannot be crossed until the story progresses.

Being confined to one part of the map fosters a sense of intrigue among players and encourages them to continue through the story to explore the entire map. Grand Theft Auto 5 ditched this feature by allowing the player to travel anywhere after completing the game’s first mission, but the area restrictions the series was once known for were arguably one of its most compelling features.

9 Pursuing Different Relationships

CJ meets Denise Robinson during the “Burning Desire” mission, where he is forced to rescue her from a building he set on fire. After safely extracting her and taking her home, the option to ask her on a date becomes available to players.

Multiple GTA games released after San Andreas have taken up dating, but no one has done it to the same extent. By enhancing CJ’s relationship with a love interest, he gains access to their unique vehicle and also offers different dating scenarios depending on the level of romance achieved.

8 chainsaw fight

Chainsaws offer what is arguably the most visceral form of combat in all GTA series. If the player is in possession of a chainsaw, the player does not have to worry about physical brawling as one blow will likely destroy those unlucky enough to be in the radius of the blade.

Chainsaws seem to appear randomly in the series and are never guaranteed to return, but it’s hard to deny the benefits of owning a chainsaw. Their return in Grand Theft Auto 6 could make for some much more harrowing missions and scenarios if used correctly.

7 The ability to drive a train

GTA 5 including a surprisingly fun way to escape the police in the form of trains. If the player suffers from a desired level of 5 stars, he can just jump on a passing train and flee, a process that for some reason completely confused the chasing police.

San Andreas allowed the player to control trains, a feature that was absent in GTA 5. While in the driver’s seat, CJ was able to adjust the speed to what he wanted and even derail by speeding. This feature allowed for a shocking level of destruction, so it would be interesting to experience an updated version of it in GTA 6.

6 Adjustable body weight

Surviving the criminal world of San Andreas required more than just impeccable aiming and body armor. It was also necessary to be well fed. The longer CJ went without food, the more his weight would decrease, often leading to a terrifying loss of health.

This concept fostered a sense of realism and made CJ’s journey feel more natural. No one could see the end of CJ’s story without a few good meals, so letting him eat through the entire story made him a much more believable character. The option to change a character’s physical appearance may allow players to inject a part of themselves into the main character of GTA 6so hopefully the feature will return.

5 Shocking Betrayal

One of the most shocking twists in video game history saw Ryder and Big Smoke betray CJ and his brother. The relationship between these four characters portrayed them as a family, but a certain lust for power revealed that their bond was superficial and fictitious.

There have been multiple betrayals in later episodes, but none are as shocking as this one. The time given to the player to develop a fondness for these characters made their insidious reveal that much more impressive. if GTA 6 has multiple protagonists, the climax of the story could see one betraying the others.

4 Jetpack Traversal

The mission “Black Project” in San Andreas enabled CJ to obtain and use a jetpack, one of the game’s best modes of transportation. After purchasing one, CJ was allowed to ascend to mind-boggling heights, a feat that offered a stunning level of exploration.

It worked surprisingly well given the game’s somewhat unpredictable controls, so it could now be implemented even more efficiently. Flying through the air in an airplane is one of the best features of the franchise, but the precision that a jetpack allows makes exploration much less difficult.

3 Driving school

drive in GTA is a skill that must be obtained, but San Andreas gave players the chance to test their skills in a driving school. Unlike a regular driving lesson, the missions that came with this particular school required CJ to perform a number of stunts and tricks in order to get a pass.

Some of the stunts were exceptionally difficult to perform, but that’s what made the experience so much fun. Being rewarded for landing seemingly impossible jumps was an empowering feeling, so maybe they’re due for another moment in the spotlight.

2 Unique Combat Styles

San Andreas offered the player the chance to study different fighting styles. Depending on what the player wished, CJ could specialize in Kung Fu, Boxing or Muay Thai, three unique forms of martial arts each with a different set of movement.

The option to choose from these three combat styles allowed the player to shape CJ to his liking and perform as he saw fit in hand-to-hand combat. While each style essentially accomplished the same thing, their implementation allowed for some interesting experimentation.

1 Acquire territories

One of CJ’s main goals during the late game of San Andreas was to reclaim the former lawns of Grove Street. Several gangs have taken advantage of his absence and claimed what once belonged to him, so it’s up to CJ and his remaining minions to take back what they believe is rightfully theirs.

This can be quite challenging due to Los Santos’ disorganized state and the power of enemy gangs, but this makes reclaiming lost territories that much more rewarding. The ability to exterminate entire enemy groups made it possible to remove all threats and thus made the player feel like the game was complete.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is under development.
