Technically speaking

Street Fighter 5 started life with overwhelming fans everywhere, making the game fall below Capcom’s initial sales expectations, but things kept improving and progressing to eventual success.

As of June 30, 2022, Street Fighter 5 has finally become Capcom’s best-selling single-release fighting game in their history.

The updated Platinum Titles page for Capcom confirms that SF5 now has 6.6 million units sold after 6 and a half years on the market, making it number 8 in the company’s overall ranking.

That now surpasses Street Fighter 2 in the Super Nintendo’s 6.3 million units, which held that record for nearly 30 years.

Of course, it’s important to point out that only what Capcom shows counts for individual releases, while previous Street Fighter entries were broken up into individual titles (Super Street Fighter 4, Ultra Street Fighter 4, etc.).

Taking that into account, Street Fighter 5 is still way behind Street Fighter 2’s 15+ million copies and Street Fighter 4’s roughly 9 million – and it probably won’t catch up to them at this rate.

What’s pretty impressive, though, is that SF5 was still able to sell 400,000 additional units in the second quarter of the year. That’s the most we’ve seen in a while, and again, that’s for a game over 6 years old.

With no more substantial content coming to SF5, many of these sales were likely tied to the growing hype surrounding Street Fighter 6 after the initial reveals.

During the same period, the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection sold an additional 200,000 units, reaching a lifespan of 2.4 million units.

The Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 now also has the original UMVC3 and Marvel vs. Capcom eclipsed by reaching 1.4 million copies.

Unfortunately, Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite can’t say the same, as it’s still sitting at 1.9 million units from the abandoned title.

It’s going to be very interesting to see what kind of momentum Capcom has over the remaining quarters of the year as the outlook for SF6 continues to grow and whether SF5 will continue to sell strongly before heading into the sunset.
