For many pokemon fans, one of the best moments in a new main game is choosing your first companion, and Pokemon Scarlet and purplestarters enjoy a lot of attention on the internet. While little is officially known about all three starters and their evolutions, leakers have shared information about them in the five months since Gen 9 was unveiled, including possible type combinations. Pokemon Scarlet and purple‘s Sprigatito is said to evolve into a Grass and Dark Pokemon, according to these leaks.
some discussed Scarlet and purple‘s Fuecoco and its hidden ability, which may have to do with food – possibly something like gluttony, ripening or even harvesting. Still, Sprigatito has been said to be the strongest starter Pokemon when his Hidden Ability is unlocked, even though his Hidden Ability has never been revealed. Since there are many Abilities that could make Sprigatito’s evolution an outlier, it’s worth taking a look at which ones have become incredibly powerful in main games to Pokemon Sword and Shield.
shadow tag
Shadow Tag is the Ability that made Mega Gengar an incredibly powerful Pokemon in Gen 6, as this Ability is invaluable when it comes to countering strategic switches and even preventing some Pokemon from using their moves. In the Gen 8 meta, Gothitelle became a strong answer to Pokemon taking out often, although it didn’t stop Incineroar using Parting Shot or moves like U-Turn. In Pokemon Scarlet and purplecan change things and make something similar to Shadow Tag a good skill for Sprigatito’s evolution to get.
Speed boost
One of the most notable examples of Speed Boost being a powerful asset comes from Blaziken in Gen 6, who not only had access to this Ability, but also STAB moves like Fire Blitz and High Jump Kick to unlock the to beat most teams alone. Since Speed Boost grants +1 Speed at the end of each turn, combining this with stat-boosting moves like Swords Dance makes each Pokemon harder to counter. Having a grass/dark animal in Scarlet and purple which also uses Speed Boost can make it quite powerful if it accesses moves like Leaf Blade, Dark Pulse or Crunch.
moxie
Moxie is the hidden ability of Pokemon such as Gyarados, Mightyena, Honchkrow and Salamence. Often associated with Dark-type Pokemon, Moxie would make a lot of sense as the Hidden Ability of Sprigatito’s evolution, given its alleged type combination. What this Ability does is award a +1 to Attack for every knockout the user scores, which can easily snowball one’s success if the user’s base stats and their move pool are reasonable. The only limit Moxie imposes is that it won’t fire if the user’s attack stat is already +6 stages, meaning further increments mean nothing.
Magic Guard
Magic Guard ensures that the user only takes damage from direct attacks, meaning Pokemon with Magic Guard are effectively immune to all damage that comes from other sources. Examples include residual damage from Burn and Poison, weather damage from Sandstorm and Hail, access hazards like Stealth Rock, or damage from moves like Leech Seed, and binding side effects. Most impressive is the fact that Magic Guard prevents the user from taking damage when they hold a Life Orb, despite the Pokemon still getting the damage boost from this item, which could make Sprigatito a massive threat in Pokemon Scarlet and purple.
Adaptability
Adaptability is particularly powerful on Pokemon that already have a good range of moves with an attack bonus of the same type (STAB). What Adaptability does is further increase the damage of 50 percent to STAB moves, causing them to deal twice their base damage in total. This can be incredibly broken in combination with Pokemon Scarlet and purple‘s rumored STAB Tera move, an attack that supposedly gives all Terastallized Pokemon the ability to deal STAB damage. With Adaptability, that STAB damage would still be 100 percent extra instead of the regular 50 percent.
joker
Like Moxie, Prankster is a skill typically associated with Dark-type Pokemon, and it prioritizes all status moves. Prankster would be incredible for a starter to have in Pokemon Scarlet and purple because it would let the user go first in most scenarios where they don’t attack directly, and status moves are often game-changers in tough battles.
Protean/Libero
Finally, what would probably be the strongest hidden ability for Sprigatito’s evolution is Protean (or Libero). These Abilities cause the Pokemon to change type to match the attack it’s going to use, causing STAB damage on each attack, regardless of the original type combination. These Abilities made Pokemon like Greninja and Cinderace definitive threats on the battlefield, as the effect of Protean or Libero can also be used to gain a different type and resist opposing moves, much like Terastallization. Speaking of which, the interaction between Pokemon Scarlet and VioletTerastallization and Protean can be problematic and worth keeping an eye out for as it returns on monsters in Gen 9.
pokemon Scarlet and purple release on November 18, 2022 for Nintendo Switch.
