Kuroko’s Basketball is packed with talented players, but none are as gifted as the Generation of Miracles. This elite group of basketball pros came together at Teikō Junior High and the ultimate team was born. There’s the unpredictable Aomine, the copycat Kise, the hulking Murasakibara, the accurate Midorima, the ghost Kuroko, and Seijūrō Akashi, their fearsome leader and oracle.
Akashi is intense, driven and proud. He knows the power of his abilities and makes sure that those around him know it too. A captain of the Generation of Miracles and Rakuzan High, Akashi Teikō is undoubtedly a fierce leader. However, his leadership style can be interpreted as questionable.
Akashi’s childhood
Akashi was born into a wealthy family, as the firstborn son. His father was a strict man who pressured Akashi to achieve excellence as was his duty as a member of a noble family. As a young boy, his father imposed rigorous training in everything from music to sports to academics. His mother, on the other hand, was his relief in the midst of this pressure. She was a nice woman who introduced basketball to Akashi. She convinced her husband to allow Akashi some time off between his studies. He showed a gift for basketball and it made him happy to play in his spare time. His skill level also improved, of course.
Unfortunately, disaster struck when Akashi’s mother fell ill and died while he was in elementary school. His father became even stricter after that. He grew up as a very unhappy child. Not only did he grieve for his mother, but he also had to obey his father’s demands to master the skills on his ever-growing list. Every time he mastered one, he had to master the other. According to his father, Akashi men should excel in all areas, such as weapons and letters.
Akashi’s Ascension to Captain
When Akashi joined Teikō Junior High as a freshman, he decided to join the basketball club. The rest of the Generation of Miracles, with the exception of Kise, are also freshmen at this point, and they were all at basketball tryouts. It is clear that Teikō takes basketball very seriously, as their school has a reputation for having a strong team. After a test to gauge the freshmen’s strengths and skills, the strings were announced. Kuroko managed to get a place in the third string team, but to everyone’s surprise, four freshmen managed to make it to the first string team, a feat that is normally not achieved. The lucky four were Murasakibara, Aomine, Midorima and of course Akashi. The tests were not particularly difficult for him, as he was used to intense physical training, thanks to his father’s desire for overall perfection.
One day Akashi, Midorima, and Murasakibara came in while Aomine and Kuroko were practicing. Akashi noted Kuroko’s passion and constant practice to improve, even equated with that of a veteran. However, he said he doesn’t feel anything when he looks at him, a lack of presence.
Akashi sees potential in Kuroko and tells him that this invisibility can be greatly weaponized. Three months later, Kuroko finally understood what Akashi meant and learned how to use his diminishing presence during a basketball game. He is a brilliant passer and the fact that he practically disappears on the pitch became his signature style of play. Akashi’s advice secured Kuroko a place on the first string team. Akashi guided Kuroko on the first string throughout his time, helping him adapt to the overwhelming strength of the team.
The current captain of the basketball team, Shūzō Nijimura, eventually decided to give up his role as captain when Kise finally made it to the first tier. His father was in the hospital for a while and while his condition was stable, it was uncertain what it will be like in the future when the Nationals start. Nijimura then told Akashi that he would be the captain from now on. With the whole team together and Akashi as captain, the first series is now what we know today as the Generation of Miracles.
Akashi’s Dual Personality
Akashi is depicted with heterochromatic eyes, one red and the other orange. His eye color is indicative of his split personality. This dual personality was born from balancing his grueling home schedule and his elementary school days. The red-eyed old Akashi was still just as determined to win as the current Akashi, but treated his teammates in a more respectful way.
Akashi with heterochromatic eyes awoke as his Emperor Eye ability kicked in. This Akashi is intense, intimidating and hard; he even tried to stab Kagami with scissors. While in sophomore year, the first string won their second national championship in a row. The team’s winning streak was glorious until the coach fell ill. After this, the main motivation of the team was a great desire to win. Akashi’s teammates also started to grow into their own individual players with their own talents, making them harder to control. Ultimately, the victory became Akashi’s burden and obligation. He feared that his team would outgrow him, forever ending the joy he used to find in basketball. His solace in the sport was gone, creating this new Akashi.
The old Akashi lies deep within Akashi’s consciousness. The current Akashi brought home Teikō’s third national championship. Even if the old Akashi returns, the new one will still exist as a replacement, not a replacement.
Other skills aside, Akashi’s signature game is the Emperor’s Eye. This describes Akashi’s ability to predict his opponents’ next moves. His eyes ignore every move on the pitch, from offense to defense. Heart rate, breath, sweat, muscle contraction; there’s nothing Akashi’s Emperor Eye doesn’t see. In other words, Akashi can see the future of his opponent’s moves. Nothing gets past Akashi, making him a fearsome force to be reckoned with on the pitch.
