When players encounter enemies in video games, the first instinct is to kill them. That’s often how people win the game, but some situations require a little more finesse. The heroes occasionally need information about where to go. Interrogating enemies can help them get that information.
Certain titles allow players to participate in that process. They extract information from enemies in intense minigames, usually using painful methods bordering on sadism. As a result, these sequences are sometimes more disturbing than typical virtual violence. At least in combat, the targets shoot back.
7 Informant Interrogations – The Batman: Arkham Series
While terrifying interrogations are a staple of Batman, they really play a role in the gameplay Arkham City. When the Dark Knight sees a Riddler Informer among a group of villains, he can take out everyone around the Informer before surrendering him to his mercy. He usually lifts the offender by the throat or holds him in other compromising positions. Once the Caped Crusader has the information, he brutally knocks the informant down with a crushing blow. The following games all feature this mechanic, but it continues into the series’ conclusion.
In search of the eponymous Arkham Knight, Batman pins one of the villain’s henchmen to the ground. He then yells into his car and slowly pushes it over the man’s head. The image is extreme enough, but the screams of the man and the hero yelling at him makes it even more impressive, as it shows that Batman is really losing his cool. The only way to make this even more brutal would be if players could crush the poor sap’s skull, but that’s against the Dark Knight’s code.
6 Threatening the Butcher – Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019)
Much of modern warfare is about fighting terrorists, and this: Duty reboot of a reboot sees the SAS capture one of their figureheads: “The Butcher.” This sets the stage for an exercise in psychological torture. The darkroom and clandestine atmosphere would be bad enough, but it gets even more twisted when the butcher’s family enters.
Players can direct their wrath on him or his wife and son. Pointing the gun at either party provokes emotional pleas from everyone involved. Granted, the weapon is empty, but they don’t know that. As if the situation couldn’t get any more unstable, the officers loaded the revolver and increased the stake sixfold. Even after getting the desired information, fans can still execute the villain. A superhero even darker than Batman is the Punisher. This Marvel vigilante routinely mows down the filth of the criminal underworld in retaliation for his murdered family and a failed justice system. Players fully embrace that bloodthirsty mantra in the 2004 title, based on the Thomas Jane movie.
During this matching game, the Punisher pumps villains for information about his next target. He can hurt and eventually kill them with any machine or tool available. When he turns people into mincemeat, it’s hard to watch the screen. However, the Punisher maintains his cold composure through it all, making his character more threatening. The fact that such horrific sights don’t deter him shows how scarred he is. Moreover, it testifies to the demented creativity of the developers.
4 Interviews with suspects – LA Noire
It goes without saying that a detective story would contain questions. Main character Cole Phelps drags perpetrators to the station several times LA Noire, and it unfolds in the style of 1940s hard-boiled capers. This means it is anything but professional. His partners regularly suggest turning down suspects’ confessions and peppering their suggestions with the odd ethnic or sexist slur. Phelps tries a civilian veneer, but even he isn’t above taking insults when he’s on the trail. All this inevitably leads to heating.
The tension escalates to tangible levels, especially for the more serious crimes. This increases the pressure for Phelps to get it right. If he doesn’t read the person properly or put together the evidence, he can sentence an innocent soul to prosecution by corrupt cops. Suffice it to say that wouldn’t look good on the report.
3 Environmental Interrogations – Splinter Cell: Conviction
Interrogation is a recurring element in the Splinter Cell series, but it gets a particular focus in Persuasion. In an evolution of the Punisher series, Sam Fisher must inflict as much pain as it takes to get the goods. He can clearly walk the basic route with his fists, but the environmental strikes are more fun.
Depending on where he is, Fisher can use the world around him to injure his targets. Options range from banging them against a piano to banging their heads in a toilet sink. These objects are all just tools in his toolbox, meaning players will never look at the hero the same way again. Sam Fisher is someone who can turn anything into a torture device, which simply makes being in the same room a daunting task.
2 By the Book – Grand Theft Auto 5
Bringing out a new series of news stories exposing the depravity of video games, Grand Theft Auto 5 stacks a torture scene on top of all its other gleefully offensive content. The government forces the main trio of crooks to do various off-the-book jobs. One is to kill a terrorist, in which a poor informant named Ferdinand is tortured.
The unhinged Trevor is given the fortunate task of causing pain, and it’s as twisted as you’d expect. Players choose from a variety of tools, such as pliers, jumper cables, and a tank of water before heading into town on the victim. The whole series shoots at torture tactics used in the real war on terror. In it it is tinged with the GTA The series’ dark humor, thanks in no small part to Trevor’s snide remarks and Ferdinand’s minor complaints (such as damaging his perfect teeth). With luck, gamers will laugh and cry at the same time.
1 Count Reuven’s Treasure – The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

One misstep will shatter the facade and shake up the whole wasp’s nest. To make matters worse, hearing Triss’s anguished screams from the other room weakens his resolve. As icing on the cake, spy master Dijkstra also wants the witch to be able to find out the location of his treasure. This series pulls players in a million different directions at once. Even the most fluent speaker cannot achieve all goals here. It’s just a matter of deciding what compromises to make: always a demoralizing prospect.
