A reader is fed up with the lack of new game releases and wonders why publishers have become so secretive in 2022.
Usually these people say something like ‘just play old games’ or ‘cut your backlog’ or they insist they’re fine so they don’t see any reason to worry. But that misses the bigger picture. It ignores the fact that the game industry has stalled and isn’t releasing new games at the same pace as before, or, perhaps more importantly, it talks about new games.
It’s not like I have a business degree or anything, but I would have thought that if you’re in a situation where output has declined through no fault of your own, the way to make up for that is to hang out with your co-workers. audience more than usual, keep them reassured that new products are coming, and maybe reveal others sooner than you otherwise would. Make it clear that there is plenty to look forward to and emphasize that this is only a temporary situation. But that’s not what happened, instead the opposite has happened.
I enjoy following the games industry almost as much as I enjoy playing its games and I like to think that I’m pretty knowledgeable about companies and why they do certain things and don’t do certain things, especially those that at first face makes no sense. For example, I don’t agree that E3 is dying, but I understand that companies don’t like paying for it and supporting a platform for their rivals, and developers don’t like to stop working on games that come out by Christmas. to create and squeeze demos in the middle of summer.
I disagree, I think there are more positives than negatives, but it’s fine, at least I understand the logic behind it. But what are they doing now? I don’t get it all.
The only thing that would make sense is that they don’t talk about anything because they have nothing to talk about, but we know that’s not true. Microsoft announced a ton of games years ago, and Sony released God Of War Ragnarök this year, with many more in the pipeline. We know this not just out of simple logic, but because everything gets leaked these days anyway.
Sony is the worst, but it is also Microsoft and all third-party publishers. It must surely be an indication to them that they are dropping the ball as Nintendo, of all people, is doing their best to keep fans informed and new games coming out at a rapid pace.
So there are no new games to play and no new games to look forward to, or at least no further than a logo and a teaser trailer. I’ve never been so bored as a gamer and I’m not surprised that video game sales are much lower than in previous years. It’s not just because the pandemic is over, it’s because the video game industry has retreated into its shell and refuses to get out.
No one could have prepared or predicted the pandemic, but games companies have made the worst of a bad situation and I see no end in sight.
