Atomic Heart: This Soviet BioShock Looks Ultra New, Coming On Xbox Game Pass
Taking inspiration from the tenors of the genre is not out of place, especially when done right and with a little creativity. Atomic Hearts seems to fit into this category, except that the BioShock formula (especially from a gameplay standpoint) is revisited here with a USSR sauce.
The sickle and the plasmid
Four years ago, Atomic Heart was first introduced: very quickly it built a solid reputation thanks to its atypical universe and unbridled action. Welcome to the Soviet Union between the 1930s and 1960s: however, it is an alternate reality in which the technology is highly advanced. The player takes on the role of a KGB agent, sent to investigate a mysterious factory.
In and around the site, nothing goes as planned and the ‘populations’, both organic and robotic, turn out to be hostile. A good excuse to take up arms during eerily nervous combat, where both firearms and elemental powers can be used with the other hand. A system taken directly from Bioshock, which makes the comparison legitimate on more than one point.
An improved (Soviet) FPS
To raise expectations, Russian studio Mundfish has just released a new trailer (which you’ll find at the beginning of the article), focusing exclusively on the gameplay. We can see Bioshock, but also fast FPS like Wolfenstein for a really promising result: The sensations are visceral and the technical execution meets expectations.
It remains to be seen what the (rather intriguing) universe will give of itself, and especially the story and the writing of it. In order to trust the public, we found out that the writer had been working on it for a whopping seven years. We keep our fingers crossed that the game is worth it.
Atomic Heart will be released this year on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series, and Xbox One. It will also be available on Game Pass on D-Day.
