miracle Comics has a history spanning decades and is made up of thousands of stories and characters that have changed drastically over the years; with so much content, continuity is difficult to maintain. While Marvel doesn’t go the reboot route as often as its fellow comic book company, DC Comics, they do hand out a retcon or two from time to time. When things just get out of hand, or need to revive a certain character, an overview of their history, origins, and even original abilities is implemented.
The changes can vary depending on the writer involved and can work in a number of ways, some good and some bad. More often than not, these changes are for the better to give fans some much-needed clarity or to advance a character without moving them forward in time and space. Here are some Marvel Comics retcons that were the best.
6 the green door
For a long time, the Hulk archetype was one of the most unique and somewhat confusing groups in Marvel Comics. Since Bruce Banner originally became the Hulk, several new individuals have appeared as Hulks, creating an entire faction called the Gamma Corps. Jennifer Walters as She-Hulk, Betty Ross and her father have both emerged as Red Hulks and, along with many others, have all appeared on the battlefield and even died in battle.
However, once a Hulk, always a Hulk, because everyone who perished has returned to the world of the living with no memory of their absence. How the Hulks continually reincarnate is a long-running question recently answered in avengers #684, which expanded on the Hulk’s constant cycle of life and death. When a Hulk dies, they go to their own afterlife where they must fight their way to the Green Door, allowing them to come back to life. This went well with the new mystical powers of Gamma Energy, as the Incredible Hulk himself went through several drastic changes in terms of his abilities and lineage.
5 Moira is a mutant
Moira Mactaggart is one of the most enigmatic characters in the Marvel Universe who has circled the fate of the X-Men and Mutants since she was created by Chris Claremont and Dave Cockrum. Her first major appearance was when she was hired as a housekeeper for the Xavier Institute and one of its founders. Her friendship with Charles Xavier and the mutants in his care grew into a lifelong mission to do everything she could to help her friends.
Sadly, Moira’s life has encompassed tragedy after tragedy, including her death. Miraculously, Moira came back to life without explanation. This all changed recently when it was confirmed that Moira is indeed a mutant and that she has the ability to reincarnate with all her memories intact. This new revelation has knocked Moira out and she must now accept that she is one of the most important mutants in the world who holds the fate of the entire race in her hands.
4 Jean Gray is alive
Jean Gray is one of the most famous founders of the X-Men and a well-known mutant in the Marvel Comics universe. She has been a mainstay of the mutant community since her defining moment as the Dark Phoenix. In the cosmic force story, Jean Gray served as the ship that contained the Phoenix Force and became one of the most powerful beings on the planet.
Unfortunately, the power swell in Jean corrupted her and drove her to do incredibly bad things. Jean’s actions resulted in her own death by sacrificing herself for her friends. However, Jean’s first resurrection of many was revealed: the phoenix that died was in fact a copy made by the Phoenix Force itself. The real Jean Gray resurfaced five years later after being discovered by fishermen trapped in a psychic cocoon. Her resurgence continued Jean’s popularity and made her a mainstay on the team.
3 The Origin of Star-Lord
Star-Lord has become quite popular since his appearance in live-action movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While Star-Lord was a well-heeled character in his own comics, his parentage was a bit average until he was put in the hands of Brian Michael Bendis.
Originally just a normal human being, Peter Quill’s birth was changed, and he eventually became an alien hybrid with a human mother and an alien father. The main difference between the origin of Star-lord in the comics and the Guardians of the Universe Movie Is Who His Dad Is: J’son of Spartax serves as Peter Quil’s father in the comic book world, while Star-Lord’s parentage was elevated to celestial status with Ego as his biological father in the movies.
2 Wolverine’s claws
Wolverine is arguably the most popular Marvel Comics character in the world. The character’s legacy has transcended and crossed comics with animation, live action movies, and even video games. The man with the adamantium skeleton has been a dominant force in multiple Marvel Comics universes and survived most of the heroes he fought with thanks to his healing factor.
Wolverine’s Healing Factor is constantly at work, keeping the adamantium infection at bay and healing his numerous battle wounds, including the extension of his claws. Wolverine’s claws weren’t always one of his mutations, though. They were originally supposed to be part of the gloves he wore, but this was quickly changed as the character became more fleshed out. This change made a big difference to the future of the character that defined him in the comics, especially after Magneto tore the unbreakable metal from his bones.
1 The original sins
Original sin is one of the few blatant Marvel Comics retcons that spanned the entire Marvel universe. Kick off with the Death of the Watcher, in every issue of Original sina new discovery was made by readers that drew them further into the mystery of the murder of the cosmic being.
Some of the Oldest Truths in the Marvelcontinuity were changed or completely changed in the series, from Tony Stark who was responsible for creating the Hulk to Luke Cage’s father as founder of a previous Avengers team and its leader. Original sin rolled the dice on countless heroes and villains, resulting in a whole new landscape for the Marvel universe.
