New stories from The Borderlands fans are, understandably, focused on the new cast of characters the story will focus on. Potential border areas cameos have also been discussed, with much excitement to see Rhys appear in the first trailer. However, one of the most interesting aspects of the Gamescom footage is the confirmation that one of the border areas the universe’s many weapon brands will play a big part.
In the violent world Gearbox has created, it’s not surprising that weapons manufacturers are important to the story. Players have witnessed the fall of the Atlas company and its revival by Rhys, fought against Maliwan in Borderland 3, and gained insight into Dahl’s military and mining efforts. Jakobs took on new importance with the introduction of Wainwright, and the appearances of Mr. Torgue have always kept his brand in mind. Hyperion’s impact is also unforgettable, and now fans finally get the chance to learn what Tediore is all about in New stories from The Borderlands.
Tediore is becoming more and more important is a long time ago
With so much border areas releasing games, Gearbox has had time to flesh out a majority of the series’ weapons makers, with only Vladof and Tediore needing more knowledge. While Vladof’s time to star will likely come later, Tediore will finally take on a major role in the upcoming spin-off. While the talking and throwable weapons have made the brand memorable from a gameplay perspective, it’s rarely mentioned story-wise.
Raising Tediore usually comes at the cost of brand quality, with characters like Rhys poking fun at Tediore and his weapon quality. In-universe, this makes sense, as Tediore has been treated as one of the most benevolent companies as a brand. Essentially, Tediore intentionally makes and releases cheap weapons so that everyone on Pandora – and planets filled with other threats – has a chance to fight back and protect themselves. Described as weapons for the working class, Tediore rifles are so cheap that they can be thrown away rather than reloaded, which explains their gimmick.
The bit of information fans have not only explains why Tediore is the butt of so many jokes, as several Tediore weapons can be bought for the price of one of the competition’s weapons, but it also makes the invasion of Promethea more interesting. Why exactly a company like Tediore would invade Rhys’s new home planet is unclear, as any conflict doesn’t seem to revolve around Tediore based on what’s known so far. Perhaps new leadership is responsible for the decision, but either way, it’s exciting to see Tediore finally take on a bigger role.
Although it will be difficult for everyone border areas manufacturer to become as memorable as Hyperion, as Handsome Jack made the company iconic, many of the weapons manufacturers in border areas can of course fit into villainous roles. From greedy high-ups to soldiers with unique enemy types, there’s plenty of story and gameplay potential that comes from using a manufacturer as an antagonist. As long as Tediore’s invasion is properly explained, the company’s appearance could become one of the most attractive parts of the game for those into border areas‘ lore.
With companies like Atlas and Hyperion filling up for years, it’s nice to see Tediore finally getting some time in the spotlight. Hopefully, Borderlands 4 will delve into Vladof in a similar way, as more can and should be done with the Russian-themed group. Thanks to New stories from The Borderlands, Tediore has a chance to become more than just a source of walking weapons and cheap equipment, something that should happen to the other company that needs more knowledge. Anyway, Tediore’s involvement is something that makes New stories from The Borderlands‘ story much more interesting, and the game should benefit from using a less prominent border areas organization.
New stories from the border countries launches October 21 for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
