Age of Mythology is a classic entry in the Age Of Empires franchise, the main difference being the mythological aspects of this spin-off. While the campaigns’ stories are heavily influenced by Greek, Egyptian, Norse, Atlantean, and even Chinese mythology, the main gameplay aspect differs from others. Age Of Empires games is the myth units.

These powerful creatures of various kinds can make or break an army and bring down entire civilizations in seconds if used correctly. While it’s hard to name the best mythical units in the game and its expansions, there are some that are undeniably better to have around than others.

Cyclops

One of the first myth units players will encounter in the main campaign, a Cyclops is a widely recognized humanoid creature with one eye. They are big and like to carry around a club in their game form. A notable part of Greek mythology, the Cyclops is one of the myth units unlocked in the second age of the Greek leveling system, unlocked by following Ares in leveling up to the classical era.

Cyclops is a mighty warrior with the ability to lift and throw an enemy unit for massive damage. Between that and a high health bar, the Cyclops is a great unit to get on any team, especially for early-game attacks on enemies. They also hit buildings well, far better than almost anything Greek players can get in that early phase of the game.

colossus

One of the Atlantean creatures of the Heroic Age, the Behemoth, is good as the Cyclops for similar reasons. A tank-like creature unlocked by following the Titan Rheia, the Behemoth has a massive health bar and does an excellent job against buildings. It is slower than the Cyclops, but is immensely capable of providing the rearguard in any army for deadly attacks deep into the heart of enemy territory.

A Behemoth regenerates health as a special ability at a rate of 2HP per second and gains massive bonuses that attack against buildings as well as other myth units. Although it moves slowly, it can be a great asset in both defense and attack.

fire giant

The Fire Giant is a Mythic Age unit in the Norse levels, which is literally a mass of fire and capable of throwing fireballs to deal massive damage to units and buildings. The Fire Giant is a figure worshiped by Age of Mythology players for complete lethality as a ranged unit. It can also be unlocked by following Baldr of Hel in the Mythic Age.

If you send multiple fire giants to an enemy civilization, with a small infantry backup, the civilization will likely be destroyed. The rate of destruction that occurs with several of them together, especially coupled with their special ability to throw three fireballs at once, has been continuously devastating since the game’s release twenty years ago.

Valkyrie

Another Norse unit, the Valkyrie, differs from the Fire Giant’s all-encompassing destruction. A Valkyrie, unlocked by following Freyja in the classic era, is a healer myth unit. It can storm armies in battle with the speed of cavalry units, hold its own as a strong fighter and also heal the other units in the midst of battles.

This is an incredibly useful piece of strategy when used correctly, especially for multiple Valkyrie moving in quickly at the same time to heal large powers. The fast striking potential of these creatures makes them hugely strategic.

Scarab

The Scarab is another Egyptian myth unit, which again acts as a tank. It moves quite fast, stays low to the ground and can use its vicious claws to deal massive damage to units and buildings. Myth units that can move quickly and demolish buildings quickly are invaluable, and if players want to strike quickly into the heart of an enemy base, scarabs are ideal, as their special ability deals massive nearby poison damage when killed .

The Scarab is unlocked by Sekhmet by following the Heroic Age while playing with the Egyptians. Scarabs aren’t the best infantry units, though they deal double damage to other mythical units, but with a little cover, they’ll quickly get deep into enemy territory and wipe out front bases with the greatest of ease.

Einherjar

Easily overlooked but an absolute threat on the battlefield, the Einherjar is another Norwegian unit. The Einherjar don’t have particularly devastating attack stats and are very slow, but together in a group they can turn an army into a deadly force. The Einherjar special ability gives a morale boost to everything around it, which is useful, but turns into a huge deal with a large group of human soldiers around several Einherjar.

This means that the attack boost can be sustained for extended periods of time and will end in the human soldiers likely destroying everything they face. Einherjar can also be very useful for taking down buildings, but on their own they are too slow to do that well against powers from faster enemies. Einherjar can be unlocked by following Heimdall in the classic era.

colossi

While Age of Mythology does a good job balancing out units, so none are too powerful individually, the Colossus is a machine of utter destruction. A Greek unit unlocked by following Hephaestus in the Mythical Age, the Colossus has a massive health bar and massive attack stats. While moving slowly, this is the ultimate tank unit that stops at nothing and can heal itself by consuming gold mines and trees.

This provides the ultimate attacking power. Several Colossi attacking almost anything will knock it down before they can be stopped. Several of those attacking an army are likely to win, and very little can be done about it unless some heroes are involved.
