In general, you earn Xbox or Steam achievements by accomplishing something. Maybe you’ve completed a level, made a certain number of kills, or found a bunch of collectibles. Whatever it is, performance is supposed to be a reward for doing something right.
However, not every achievement is like that. Many developers have one that you “deserve” by failing in one way or another – usually to a spectacular degree. Getting them by accident only increases the shame you already feel for screwing up in the first place. As such, they are the ones you claim to have earned on purpose to improve your gamer score. Here are some examples of this kind of performance.
8 No Show – Prey
2017’s Prey starts off simple: you wake up in your apartment, get in a helicopter and fly to work. Unlike the rest of the game, there’s no danger around, and it’s a quiet little sequence.
Still, things can go wrong if you decide to jump on top of the helicopter you’re supposed to be riding. If you do this, the blades will hit and kill you. This earns you the No Show achievement, but it also means you died before enemies were around.
7 You are fired! – Clearing guts Detail
Viscera Cleanup Detail is a satisfying cleaning game in which you are tasked with making blood covered areas spotless. So you need to mop up liquids and dispose of body parts or other debris. When you’ve done enough, clock out.
If you’re a lazy cleaner, you can leave before all the washing and tidying up is done. But if the place is just as bad or somehow worse than you found it to be, you’ll be fired, which will get you the You’re Fired! performance. In this case, the achievement isn’t always worth it, as the game also takes away all your collectibles if you lose your job.
6 Aw man I shot Marvin in the face – Gears Tactics
Pulp Fiction fans will immediately recognize that the name of this achievement is a reference to the iconic Quentin Tarantino film. And just like in the movie, this feat is all about accidentally harming someone.
In the turn-based tactics game, you lead a squadron of COG soldiers. Since there is friendly fire, you can cause one member of the team to hurt another. If you hurt them so bad that you knock them down, you get this feat. So if you don’t get it by accident, you’ll have to decide if an feat is worth dealing damage to an ally.
5 Trim Your Mustache – Octodad: Dadliest Catch
In Octodad, you play as an octopus pretending to be a human father. For some reason, a suit is enough to hide your true identity from everyone you meet. Well, almost everyone, because there is a chef, who seems to recognize that you are an octopus. That’s why he tries to kill you during the game.
In such a case, he bursts through your garden gate and tries to suck you into his riding lawnmower. If you don’t hang from the birdhouse when it arrives, fly into the machine. Of course you die because of this, but you get an achievement in the process.
4 Good Listener – Portal 2
As funny as GlaDOS is, she can’t be trusted during the Portal games. This is clear in the original title, so if you escape the Aperture Science Facility in Portal 2, it’s easy to ignore her tricks.
One of her attempts involves opening a new test for you, claiming it’s the last one, and then you can leave. If you decide to do as she orders and enter the room, she will almost immediately pump poisonous nerve gas into the room and you will die. Still, you earn this achievement for following clues.
3 What have I done?? – Operation Simulator
Surgeon Simulator proves how hard it is to be a surgeon, especially when you don’t seem to be in complete control of your own hands. Still, you usually get enough time to complete surgery before your patient is a goner.
However, the time it takes for them to perish can be shortened if you do something to speed up the blood loss. It’s even possible to mess them up so much that they’re not even 15 seconds on your operating table. If you do this you will earn this achievement and it probably means you are not fit to be a surgeon.
2 F in Chemistry – Payday 2
While you spend most of your time robbing various establishments in Payday 2, there are other activities and goals. For example, in the Cook Off level, you are instructed to cook some meth, which also serves as loot for the mission.
An ally informs you of the ingredients you need to use to make the stuff. So, as long as you listen, it’s pretty easy to do. However, if you add the wrong chemical, the meth lab explodes, resulting in this feat. So there are positives and negatives to the failure of this task.
1 Hitting the Bottle – Yakuza 0
There are usually a few quick events during the big battles in Yakuza 0. In fact, it’s one of QTE’s best uses in gaming. One of these big duels takes place at the iconic Serena bar.
Since you’re playing as Majima at that point, the woman who runs the place (Reina) isn’t a friend. And there’s a QTE where she tries to hit you with a bottle. If you miss the prompt, she’ll smash the glass over your head. You gain an achievement for your troubles, but you also lose some health in the process.
