On July 7 this year, CD Projekt Red released the roguelike deckbbuilder GWENT: Rogue Mage, which is a single player expansion for the free to play card game GWENT: The Witcher card game. Despite originally being a minigame inside The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, GWENT has become its own spin-off title that remains popular to this day.
While most minigames are just small parts of a bigger experience, some manage to be so impressive, enjoyable and memorable that they are later released separately. These rare examples, such as geometry wars, have grown beyond their minigame roots.
Nightly Ghost Hunt (2022)
Released this year in Early Access by Coffee Stain Publishing, who had previously published Goat Simulator and Valheim, midnight ghost hunt is a multiplayer game heavily inspired by prop hunting, that is a game mode that originated as a mod within Garry’s Mod. equal to prop hunting, some players have the option to transform into one of the props on the in-game map, and the other players have to try and find the fake props.
In addition to a “horror” aesthetic with the Halloween themed cards and the imitating players as ghosts, this game sets itself apart from others. prop hunt-like titles by letting the ghosts unlock different skills and the fighters to unlock different weapons. Witch It (2020)
Published by Daedalic Entertainment, who developed the eco-friendly point-and-click adventure game A New Beginning – Final Cut, Witch It is a comedy multiplayer game from 2020 and another prop hunt-inspired title. unlike Nightly Ghost Hunt, the players who can transform into props are witches instead of ghosts, but there is still a huge variety of skills and weapons for both the witches and the hunters.
Players can also customize the costumes and designs of their witches and hunters, and there’s an in-game map editor so players can create their own unique maps. With over 15 official maps and various game modes, including “Fill a Pot”, where witches have to fill cauldrons with certain props before time runs out, this game offers hours of hide and seek.
Chao Resort Island (2017)
In the Sonic Adventure and Sonic Advance games allow players to access Chao Gardens, which are mini game areas where the player can raise their own cute creatures known as ‘Chao’. Backpack Hero (2022)
One of the most influential action-horror titles is the game from 2005 Resident Evil 4, which popularized the camera over the shoulder of the third person and fundamentally changed the survival horror genre. After unlocking a character through the gacha system, the player can level up by going through six different boards, and higher level characters can be used to battle through the Tower of Despair. With over 60 unlockable characters and 1,000 possible events, this game is perfect for fans of the series.
Orlog – Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Dice Game (2021)
Shortly after Assassin’s Creed Valhalla released in 2020, the dice minigame, war, became such an unexpected success that the developer, Ubisoft, teamed up with game collector producer PureArts to create physical sets of the game. Inside the fictional world of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, war was a popular game among the Norwegian and Anglo-Saxons.

GWENT: The Witcher Card Game (2018)
Originally featured as a minigame in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, GWENT: The Witcher Card Game is a 2018 free-to-play card game that is unique when compared to other titles in the genre. In this turn-based two-player game, each player tries to score the most points at the end of two of the three possible rounds.
Using cards from one of six different factions that each have a different play style, each player has a deck of 25 cards. Depending on the map, they can go into the Melee or Ranged ranks and have different power levels and abilities. While players can choose to use one of the cards in their hand during their turn, they can only draw three new cards per round, so it’s important to save cards if possible.
BattleBlock Theater (2013)
Developed by The Behemoth, who also Alien Hominid and Castle Crashers, BattleBlock Theater is a 2013 comic puzzle platformer in which players must navigate dangerous obstacles, collect gems and reach the end without dying. This game is directly inspired by the PDA minigames of Alien hominid.
After the SS Friendship is shipwrecked on an island ruled by cats, the ship’s captain, Hatty Hattington, is possessed by a glowing top hat and the rest of the crew is imprisoned. To save their friends, the player has to battle in deadly games.
Geometry Wars series (2005-2014)
Originally created as an Easter Egg minigame in the 2003 Project Gotham Racing 2, Geometry Wars is a series of top-down multi-directional arcade shooters that have amassed their own cult following. The minigame version has been recreated in the 2005 standalone game Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved, which was one of the most popular games on the Xbox Live Arcade.
The player controls a ship as they try to survive as long as possible against an endless swarm of vibrant neon enemies. Following the success of the original, other entries were made, including the latest installment, Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions evolved, in 2014.
