GTA V is one of the most commercially successful open world video games ever. It’s no wonder that after hundreds of hours of in-game content, players will be looking for more of that open-world sandbox action. Without further ado, these are the top 10 games like GTA V.

One of the best games like GTA V is unsurprisingly its predecessor, Grand Theft Auto IV. Powered by the RAGE engine along with the Euphoria software, Grand Theft Auto IV recreates a dark and grim image of New York City. Like GTA V, the game is an open-world sandbox with arguably a better physics engine than the sequel.

You play as Niko Bellic, a war veteran who struggles with his violent memories of the war. He migrates to Liberty City to try to breathe new life into himself. He is also looking for the man who allegedly sold his unit during the war.

Despite wanting to lead a normal life, Niko cannot escape his past. He eventually succumbs to the life of a criminal by teaming up with big mob bosses. Niko’s story is gloomy, with a mix of dark humor. I strongly believe that Grand Theft Auto IV is severely underrated for its launch performance.

There were a lot of issues at launch of the game, especially the performance on PC. Anyway, I still highly recommend checking out Grand Theft Auto IV.

Red Dead Redemption 2, a sequel to one of the most acclaimed games of the PS3 era, is like GTA V, but set in the western world. Eight years after the first game came out, Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of the most ambitious games in the open world in terms of details, graphics, and even AI behavior.

As a prequel to the first game, players take on the mantle of Arthur Morgan. Arthur is a veteran member of the Van der Linde Gang. Another prominent member of the Van der Linde Gang is the protagonist of the first game, John Marston. They commit criminal acts to express their rejection of the corrupt system.

Like GTA V, Red Dead Redemption 2 offers a variety of activities such as hunting, raiding, fishing, gambling, chores, and even bounty hunting. Though the amount of detail the world offers is much more complicated compared to most open world games.

Don’t let the age of the game fool you; LA Noire is Rockstar’s most definitive “investigation game” to date. This game made its way through being a semi-open world game with a focus on mystery and puzzle solving. LA Noire has its moments of open world exploration; however, it is linear compared to other games on the list.

You play as Cole Phelps, a war veteran turned detective after his retirement from the military. He is known for solving high profile and the most difficult cases available at the time. Its story has many ups and downs, which is what makes this game so intriguing. You solve cases by collecting clues, interviewing people and uncovering the truth.

LA Noire is known for having one of the most advanced technologies of its time, namely MotionScan. MotionScan allows the developers to capture the exact facial expressions of actors and implement them into the game engine. However, it turned out to be very expensive and now many developers consider it unnecessary.

Saints Row is a parody of the Grand Theft Auto games. The game features many more quirky and oddly overdone versions of GTA stints. The game’s most recent release is Saints Row: The Third – Remastered, which is honestly one of the most GTA-esque games compared to its sequels.

Saints Row: The Third takes place years after Saints Row 2. The 3rd Street Saints have become famous and you take on the role of the leader of the gang. As a leader, you have control over your group’s actions which may or may not lead to death.

Saints Row: The Third is one of the best games in the franchise; the following sequels are filled with exaggerated ridiculousness, powers, and even aliens. We hope the reboot would bring Saints Row back to where it came from.

Mafia: Definitive Edition is a remake of the classic Mafia from 2002. It is a game set in the 1930s with a strong emphasis on the life of a taxi driver who becomes part of the Salieri Crime Family. The gameplay is very similar to games like GTA V, but at a much slower and more realistic pace.

The story of Mafia follows Tommy Angelo, a taxi driver who unknowingly becomes part of an organized crime group called the Salieri Crime Family. Tommy climbs the ranks of the mafia and plunges into his life as a criminal. He begins to arrange a meeting with a police detective to destroy the Salieri Crime Family in exchange for witness protection.

Mafia follows similarly to LA Noire’s semi-open world structure. The game gives you a series of missions, and there are instances between missions that allow you to roam a bit freely. However, there is a huge Free Ride mode that allows you to discover secrets and random missions.

Watch Dogs 2 is a sequel to the overhyped mess Watch Dogs. Think of Watch Dogs as a GTA game, but you can hack the entire city at the touch of a button. Watch Dogs 2 follows the story of the prequel; however, you are now in Marcus Holloway’s shoes.

Marcus Holloway is a member of DedSec in the San Francisco Bay Area. He goes by the alias “Retr0.” Marcus is well adapted and all round when it comes to hacking. He can hack into any character, know their information and even cars and electronics. With these skills, Marcus wants to disable CTOS 2.0 as a form of revenge for labeling him as a criminal.

Watch Dogs 2 is honestly what the first game should have been. A more fleshed out mechanics and a well-written story. It’s definitely the best Watch Dogs game in my opinion and that’s why we’ve put it on the list here.

Please note, this game is not related to Watch Dogs. Sleeping Dogs is an open-world action game like GTA V. On the streets of Hong Kong, you play as an undercover cop looking for the Triads in Hong Kong. There are several similarities between Sleeping Dog and GTA; most notable, however, is the much more melee-focused combat system.

The melee combat system is one of the best we’ve seen in years. The punches feel heavy, the environmental attacks are gory, and overall the combat is much more fun compared to other open world games. It’s like playing as Bruce Lee or Jackie Chan in one of their movies.

While Sleeping Dogs doesn’t have any good side missions, I’d still highly recommend trying this game out as it usually sells for dirt cheap prices.

Kingdom Come Deliverance is a good mix of role-playing and open-world games like GTA V. However, it has more of a role-playing focus due to the number of character decisions and progression you can do. The game offers a first-person perspective with more realistic character states such as health, stamina, energy, and nutrition.

The story is set in Bohemia during a war in 1403. You play as Young Henry, an unnamed student who lives with his parents. During his quest to finish a sword for the king’s henchman, an army of Cuman soldiers attacked and killed Young Henry’s parents. The story starts to branch out from there depending on your decisions.

The game also revolves around a branching storyline and enduring the harsh open world of Bohemia. You can also continuously build relationships with other characters in the game and advance their questlines which may or may not give you a useful reward.

Nevertheless, Kingdom Come Deliverance is a great open world RPG that offers multiple choices for players who want to master their own faith in the brutal medieval world. These are the platforms available for Kingdom Come Deliverance:

The Witcher 3 is a fantastic fantasy medieval RPG and also an open world game. The Witcher 3 follows the events of the previous Witcher games; however, you don’t need to play the prequels to get a sense of what’s going on in this game. To this day people are singing a lot of praise for the Witcher 3, and actually a sequel to this game is coming.

The Witcher 3 is about the story of Geralt of Rivia, a legendary witch from the School of the Wolf. He is in active pursuit of his lost “daughter” Ciri. Ciri is Cintra’s only princess and was born to become a Witcher. The Wild Hunt is looking for Ciri’s true power and wants to take her into their world. The story revolves around Geralt finding and protecting Ciri at all costs.

The game has multiple missions and even side missions that CD Projekt Red has written beautifully. It has many activities and collectibles like GTA. However, it mainly focuses on the fantasy and magical elements of gameplay when it comes to knowledge. This aspect contrasts with the realism that Grand Theft Auto V strives for.

Looking at it from a broader perspective, you’d think The Witcher 3 is far from the genre of video games like GTA V. However, it is an open world sandbox adventure game with a compelling story. The Witcher 3 is available on these platforms:

Cyberpunk 2077 is one of the most recent titles on this list. It is a first-person perspective open-world RPG set in Night City. Although the game initially received massive criticism for its lack of promised content, Cyberpunk 2077 is still one of the best games like GTA.

In Cyberpunk 2077, you play the role of V. V is a mercenary who suddenly becomes involved in a riot when an iconic rockstar terrorist is implanted in his head. Johnny Silverhand, the rock star terrorist, slowly tries to take control of V’s body until they both decide to work together as a unit.

The story is passable at best; however, the most enjoyable aspect of the game is the amount of customizations and perks your options are. The customization in this game allows you to adapt to a particular style of play that suits you. Instead of being mean with the usual playstyle of warriors, clerics and mages. They give their own “cyberpunk” twist to the different playing styles.

Honestly, if you don’t give in to the hype and the promises CD Projekt Red made, Cyberpunk 2077 is a really great game.
