Obi-Wan Kenobi fans who wanted the Star Wars series to be a movie almost got their wish, as a movie trilogy starring Ewan McGregor was first planned.

Now that the Star Wars spin-off Obi-Wan Kenobi show has officially wrapped, some people behind the project are releasing more details about future plans and plans that never materialized. After the show officially ended, there were more than a few people who felt that the Disney Plus series should have been a movie instead, and it seems that was the original plan.

the limited Star Wars series takes place not long after the Empire executes Order 66 and takes over the galaxy. Obi-Wan is on the run and hiding on Tatooine at the start of the show, but is soon drawn back into the action when a very young Princess Leia gets into trouble. While the show was largely seen as struggling out of the gate, most fans felt that the story and action at the end of the six episodes was good enough that they wish it was a movie instead. It turns out that Disney actually had plans to turn the show into a feature film when the concept was first discussed.

Writer Stuart Beattie recently opened up to The Direct about exactly what plans for Obi-Wan Kenobi originally entailed, saying that not only would the series originally be a movie, but it would also become a cinema trilogy. Beattie added that the box office is struggling from Solo: A Star Wars Story was a big reason why Disney decided to go with the streaming series instead. “I wrote the movie they based the show on. So yeah. I worked on it for about a year, a year and a half. And when it was decided not to make any more spin-off movies after Solo came out, I left the project and went on to other stuff,” Beattie said. “Joby came up and took my scripts and turned it from two hours to six. So I didn’t work with them at all, I just got credit for the episodes because it was all my stuff.”

The idea of making Obi-Wan Kenobi one film even went so far as to write and direct the film by Stephen Daldry and Hossein Amini. However, the project was moved to an episodic series for Disney Plus in 2019, right around the time the streaming platform first launched. After the change, Harold was brought in as head writer and Deborah Chow was hired to direct.

If there were originally plans for a movie trilogy, that would bode well for fans hoping the Obi-Wan Kenobi would get a second season. While the folks behind the series have said Season 1 is the only season currently planned, they’ve also suggested those plans could change.

At the same time, the success of Obi-Wan Kenobi could lead Disney to lean back on its original plans. Marvel Studios has had success building movies from their Disney Plus series and vice versa. It’s not hard to think and Obi-Wan Kenobi movie could pick up where the series left off.

Obi-Wan Kenobi is now available on Disney Plus.
