Microsoft announced in early 2022 that the company planned to buy gaming conglomerate Activision Blizzard. The deal would be close to $70 billion and would bring many popular games, including the Duty franchise, in Xbox’s list of titles. While Microsoft and the Xbox platform have yet to officially take ownership of Activision Blizzard, a final deal is expected to be announced soon.
New content from Blizzard and Activision is highly sought after. Fortunately for players on Xbox and Windows, access to Activision Blizzard games could begin within the next month, subject to actions by the Federal Trade Commission.
Microsoft is waiting for authorization from the FTC before it can officially buy Activision Blizzard. The purchase will cost approximately $68.7 billion and will give Microsoft the rights to Activision Blizzard’s games, including the diablo, World of Warcraftand Duty franchises. If the FTC does not request additional information from Microsoft in the next month, the deal will close automatically. Xbox plans to have Activision incorporate Blizzard into the existing brand by the summer of 2023, although possible decisions by the US government could allow the companies to join the team much earlier.
It is currently unclear what plans the Xbox Team has for Activision Blizzard’s existing brands. While it’s conceivable that some of the biggest Activision and Blizzard titles could become Microsoft platform exclusives, it seems unlikely that the gaming titan will limit franchises. It is more likely that the future diablo, overwatchand Duty games have content exclusive to Xbox and Windows players, giving fans around the world a reason to switch to a Microsoft product or service. Of course, none of this is possible until Microsoft gains official control of Activision Blizzard.
Xbox Game Pass is already a great deal for gamers looking to expand their content offerings. When Activision and Blizzard games come out in the future, which seems likely, fans will have access to an unprecedented catalog. For now, gamers will have to sit still and keep an eye on the situation with Microsoft and Activision Blizzard. Soon there could be many opportunities to enjoy some of the world’s most celebrated games within an ecosystem that already makes it easy for players to find the experiences they desire.
