James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli revealed plans for the next phase of the iconic character’s new adventure. Broccoli noted that filming for the next 007 movie is about two years away, as the studio works to reinvent the character and find a replacement for the universe’s former protagonist, Daniel Craig.
James Bond has been a staple in the cinematic universe since its inception in May 1963 with the release of dr. no, which starred Scottish actor Sean Connery, the first protagonist to play the titular figure. After Connery, several talented actors have taken over 007’s mantel, with Craig and Pierce Brosnan embodying the last two portraits of the iconic character. The hunt is now a new face to continue the legacy of the characters, but until then, filming will have to wait.
Speaking to Deadline, Broccoli wouldn’t admit who would play James Bond next, but she did offer some insight into the next steps that would be taken. “No one is in the running,” Broccoli said. “We’re figuring out where to go with him, we’re talking about it. There’s no script and we won’t be able to come up with one until we’ve decided how we’re going to approach the next movie, because it’s really a reinvention of Bond.”
“We’re reinventing who he is, and that takes time,” Broccoli said. “I’d say filming will take at least another two years.” Craig recently ended his 15-year career as 007, which began in 2006 with: Casino royale. The actor’s last film as the emblematic character came in 2021 with No time to die, the fourth highest-grossing film in the world that year, grossing over $770 million at the worldwide box office. It will be interesting to see which direction the character takes, but what is undeniable is the fandom that surrounds the charismatic figure.
Over the years, there has been speculation as to who will claim the mantel for the next batch of 007 films, but nothing concrete has been confirmed or set in stone. Beast star Idris Elba has been the longest-running candidate to be considered for the role, making the actor the second African American to take the 007 title behind Lashana Lynch, who inherited the 007 title while Bond was in exile in No time to die. Other talented actors have also entered the early talks, but no name has officially surfaced.
The Death of Craig’s Bond in No time to die has opened a vacancy, but the critical process of finding his replacement is one that Broccoli will take her time to complete. Craig’s performance is honestly regarded as one of the best portraits of James Bond, making it essential to find someone who can elevate the character even further. With the filming going on for about two years, an announcement should be made in the coming months about the next protagonist in the 007 universe. Regardless of the direction, James Bond has a grip on a specific demographic, which could potentially expand depending on the next 007.
