While Dark Souls 2 is often seen as the black sheep of the series, some love the game. But even the biggest Dark Souls 2 fans probably despise The Gutter, and a player captured some footage of a particularly rough experience they had here.
FromSoftware games usually have two types of areas that frustrate players: locations full of poison and places that are incredibly dark. The Gutter and the Black Gulch, it leads to a combination of both heavily hated mechanics, making for some of Dark Souls 2 what most fans fear. As if The Gutter’s darkness wasn’t annoying enough, the fact that it additionally requires a lot of platforming from players makes it a chore to get through. Unfortunately, this was where Redditor ghost hardware017 struggled.
In the clip in question, the player attempts to run through The Gutter, with viewers quickly realizing why they were “a little salty.” After walking around a pot, they see an unlit bonfire. Thinking they’re safe, they head straight for it, but unfortunately it turns out to be a bit of a troll. Once they get close to the bonfire, they fall through a gap between the floor they were on and the bonfire’s platform, learning that it took one last jump to reach the other side.
While there have been many heartbreaking moments shared by FromSoftware fans, this one is especially tragic because of how close the player was to the bonfire. It feels like a cruel trick to hide one last leap into the darkness, and while the player probably wouldn’t make the same mistake twice, they’ll have to go through the Gutter again to reclaim their lost souls and set the bonfire on the correct way to activate. Fortunately, most of the comments reminded them how to approach the area.
As pointed out by HobbzTheHammer, FromSoftware put a lot of emphasis on lighting with the second game in the dark souls trilogy. As a result, they’re telling the Redditor to use a flashlight, something several other commenters cite – with some shocked that the player would be willing to enter The Gutter without a flashlight in hand. While ghost hardware017 shares that they wanted to use double swords, it may be worth sacrificing a cool build for this particular section. However, despite the criticism, commentators enjoyed the failure to give the post more than 700 upvotes.
Overall, the clip is a good reminder that Dark Souls 2The bosses aren’t the only threat gamers face. The next time players enter The Gutter, make sure they have a flashlight so they don’t suffer the same fate.
Dark Souls 2 is now available on PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
