PlatinumGames reveals that Bayonetta 3 will have an optional censorship mode, rejecting some of the game’s explicit elements.
Fans are finally going to release Bayonetta 3 later this year. It’s one of the most anticipated PlatinumGames releases on the Switch, with gamers getting a brief look at the game during a Nintendo Direct last fall. The hype for the game got even bigger when the most recent Bayonetta 3 trailer revealed the release date and confirmed it would arrive in late October.
The new trailer showcased the game’s premise, new enemies, and Bayonetta’s new demonic powers. It also showcased a number of characters such as Rodin, Enzo, and Luka, all of whom are fan favorites. Bayonetta 3 also introduces Viola, an Umbra witch who can summon a giant Cheshire Cat doll and use a katana to fight, with her fighting style and appearance similar to Raiden from Metal Gear Rises and Nero van Devil May Cry. While this trailer showed the action and character models in their original appearance, PlatinumGames reveals that there is an optional censorship mode for certain players.
This mode was announced in a tweet from PlatinumGames itself, called “Naive Angel” mode. When enabled, this mode obscures certain elements that show a lot of Bayonetta’s skin, such as when she performs her Wicked Weave attacks. Instead of stripping Bayonetta completely naked, she is covered by a bodysuit. This includes Bayonetta’s Masquerade transformations, where the tweet includes a video showing the differences whether the mode is enabled or not.
This mode is reportedly completely optional and helps appeal to a wider audience who might be slightly turned off by the game’s overly sexual content. Funnily enough, PlatinumGames hints that this mode is best for “playing in the living room” without mistaking the game for anything else. Fans noted that this mode was similar to how Bayonetta was treated in the Super Smash Bros. series, some even call it “Smash Bros.” mode.
With this mode it will probably help Bayonetta 3 reach a wider audience, without alienating fans who enjoyed the series’ bold elements. With only a few months to go before release, PlatinumGames is doing everything it can to get as many eyes on the game as possible, using this mode as a way to do that.
Bayonetta 3 will be released exclusively for Nintendo Switch on October 28, 2022.
