chainsaw man is full of strange, violent and crazy companions and side characters. Most of them are from the Public Safety Division where Denji, the protagonist, works, only a few of them are human, and none of them should be seen in the supernatural slasher franchise. The chainsaw man franchise is about Denji, a homeless vulgar teenager who earns a living by killing devils. After a near-death experience, Denji is rescued by his own devil, who fuses with him and grants Denji his chainsaw-inspired powers. These powers cause the Public Safety Division to notice and hire him under the assumption that if he doesn’t follow orders or let his new demonic side take over, he will be wiped out.

Makima’s Special Squad

In the manga, Denji is assigned to a special task force within the Public Safety Department, an experimental group of devil hunters, some of which are partially devilish. Denji, the main character, is one of the members of the half-devil. Not all special squads get along, but they are incredibly successful as a Devil Hunter squad.

One of these members is Power, pictured above. Not only is she part of Makima’s special team, but she is also assigned as his roommate because they were both homeless. She is rude, aggressive and sometimes violent. She is a devil, or a devil who has taken over the corpse of a man. The author of the manga has stated that her character is inspired by both Walter Sobchak from The Big Lebowski and Cartman from South Park.

Another member of this team is Aki Hayakawa, the opposite of Power. He is stoic, well-mannered and mature. Described as the most normal member of the squad in the manga, he hides his true emotions behind his normal, down-to-earth personality, which he sees as soft and vulnerable.

Himeno and Angel are two members who specifically work with Aki within the squad, further proving Aki’s leadership skills. Himeno had trained Aki himself, meanwhile Angel is a lazy devil who strangely has no animosity towards humans. And finally, Kobeni Higashiyama is the newest recruit of the team. She is best known for her cowardly nature, but sometimes she takes drastic measures when pushed past this point and shows her talent and agility. She also has two moles on her face, a feature she shares with a character from fire blastanother manga by the same author as chainsaw man.

Other supporting characters

The Public Safety Devil Hunters, also known as the Public Safety Division, is a government organization that hunts devils in Japan. This is the organization that employs and houses Denji. Makima herself is a high-ranking Public Safety Devil Hunter and the supervisor of the squad to which Denji belongs. She is incredibly strong and has an incredible sense of smell, along with unconventional leadership skills that she uses to manage her experimental group of misfits.

Pochita is a chainsaw devil. He lived in debt to Denji during the beginning of the story, when they were both homeless and in debt to the yakuza, and repaid that debt by becoming Denji’s heart to bring him back from the dead. Though erratic and violent, it is revealed later in the series that Pochita always wanted to be cuddled, but in his previous form was too big to do so.

And finally there is Reze. She is a teenage girl about Denji’s age who works in a cafe. She develops feelings for Denji soon after the first meeting. She is known for blushing often, especially around Denji. She also shows slight irritation towards her boss in the cafe, but is otherwise positive and cheerful.
