It's always a sad day when a much-loved online game shuts down. Unfortunately for Red Dead Online players, the possibility seems increasingly likely. Rockstar plans to keep the servers up and running for some time to come and continue to host seasonal events. However, the studio has made it clear that the MMO is on life support and the developers are getting to work on the upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6†
However, Red Dead Online fans aren't the only ones mourning the game's inevitable death. In a recent tweet, the voice actor for Red Dead Redemption 2's Arthur Morgan expressed his empathy for the fans.
"While it has my sympathy today, I know this community will never die," Arthur Morgan's voice actor Roger Clark said on Twitter. Members of the Red Dead Online community really appreciated the voice actor's endorsement. "Thanks Roger," replied one Twitter user, "Arthur himself's support makes me feel good." Others shared a similar feeling. And though not everyone knew, Red Dead OnlineAt the fan-organized funeral, those who were aware of the situation generally seemed to appreciate Clark's statement.
Red Dead Online's funeral took place today, with #RedDeadFuneral trending on Twitter as fans took a preemptive goodbye. To be clear, Rockstar hasn't taken the game offline yet and won't be anytime soon. However, Red Dead Online has not received any new content since July 2021 and is unlikely to have any new content in the pipeline. Players still have seasonal events planned and potential patches to look forward to, but Rockstar probably won't bet more than the minimum amount needed to maintain Red Dead Online†
It may not be all bad as some MMOs stay in maintenance mode for years and years. Players can still login to old MMOs like the original Guild Wars from 2005, and while the cities are sparsely populated, the game worlds may not be completely deserted. However, it's still hard to characterize some of these games as anything but dead. It may only be a matter of time before Red Dead Online“The player base is irreversibly declining and there is no guarantee it will reach an equally long afterlife.
There are also concerns that the days could be counted for the red death franchise as a whole. While Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead Online were financially successful, they didn't come close to the incredible popularity of Grand Theft Auto 5 and GTA Online† So some are concerned that Rockstar would ignore this red death in favor of the more profitable Grand Theft Auto† However, it is not too late for now red death fans to experience a few more adventures in the wild west.
Red Dead Online is now available on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
