The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild adventures are not lacking. Players can climb mountains, fight some bokoblins, or even go horseback riding. As beautiful as Hyrule is, however, many dangers await those who are not careful.

The landscape is full of tough enemies and dangers that could spell doom for Link. Dangerous monsters and the elements threaten Link at every turn. Some ways to die in jungle breath include falling to an enemy or just falling, period. Other ways to die are downright hilarious, making failure almost as fun as success.

5 Leaving the Great Plateau

The first thing Link sees after coming out of his 100-year slumber is the Great Plateau, a lush landscape that serves as the tutorial area for the game. Here, one can get their feet wet by learning the game mechanics and completing the three shrines in the area, after which the old man will give Link the glider to float smoothly on the mainland. Or, Link could just leave without the glider.

Players who want to know what’s going on down there should stay tuned. A stone wall sits at the edge of the plateau, from which you can look out over the misty expanse below. Accidentally taking a wrong step on the edge of the Plateau wall can mean instant death and holding up a sign that says “Woops” on the way down.

4 Jumping to the top of a tower and losing

To reveal more of the game’s map, Link must activate the numerous towers scattered across the landscape. To do this, he must climb up its sides and tap his Sheikah Slate on the terminals at the top.

On the ascent, he must be aware of his resistance and avoid the dangers that may be present. Link can jump to cut time, but uses stamina faster. If the resistance is close to zero and the top is within reach, he can make a final leap in an attempt to grab the ledge. If he misses, well, it’s a long way down.


3 Panic entering boiling lava

While Hyrule has its challenges, some situations will make Link say “no” unless he has the Master Sword. Such situations include a first encounter with an Igneo Talus. The giant molten rock monster induces instant panic, causing players to run in the opposite direction. Just be careful where they are running.

In the Goron region of Hyrule, lava pools and falls are everywhere. Getting beaten up by a hot stone titan can be painful, but so is boiling lava. Running from danger isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but Link shouldn’t have to choose between death by the stone monster and death by the molten rock.

If Hyrule has a Shrek equivalent, it’s Hinox. These rotund creatures will just be sleeping in the forest or on a mountain outcrop, not bothering anyone. If Link disturbs their sleep, he’d better get ready to have a fight on his hands.

While Hinox is slow, it is powerful. One hit is an almost guaranteed kill. He can hit Link, throw a log at him, or even sit on him. Hinoxes are large creatures with even larger rear ends, so it’s best to stay out of the way before using Link as a cushion.

1 WWW-Wipeout!!!

Any veteran of Hyrule knows that the best way to travel and delay rescuing Princess Zelda is shield surfing. Finding a good steep mountain gives Link the ability to slide at ridiculous speeds, and jumping off a cliff allows some air that will make Shaun White sweat.

While hitting slopes is good fun, these shields can only take a little damage. If Link is shield surfing and his shield breaks, Link will fall forward in full ragdoll mode. He’s sure to end up in the Hall of Meat in that case.
