VGChartz methodology: Hardware estimates are based on retail samples and trends in individual countries, which are then extrapolated to represent the wider region. This typically allows us to produce figures that end up being within 10% of the actual totals.
This data is regularly compared with official shipping figures released by the console manufacturers and figures estimated by regional trackers with greater market coverage than we do. We then update our own estimates to match those numbers. This can lead to frequent changes, often in a short period of time, but we believe it is important to prioritize accuracy over consistency.
Please note that our estimates are based on resale data (units sold to consumers). In almost all cases, the numbers released by console manufacturers are based on shipping data (sell-in), where once a device has left the factory and entered the supply chain for delivery, it is considered a sale. Therefore, there is always a discrepancy between the companies’ numbers (sell-in) and VGChartz’s estimates (sell-through), even after we make adjustments. The only exception to that is when a console has been discontinued and the remaining stock eventually sells out – at that point the numbers match.
