Anonymous, 3 hours agoWith the amount for this device. I prefer to buy Nintendo Switch+ game cards. It’s the same debate as PCs versus consoles. Steamdeck can be used as a full desktop computer. You could also emulate all nintendo, playstation and xbox handhelds, including switch. So it offers much better value than switching.

Raytracing is a… moreI agree with the part where you claim that the Steam Deck is a milestone [in many ways]. It gives us a perspective on the contradiction of the current “meta” in PC gaming in terms of how we interact with it and also with regard to operating systems used for gaming and beyond even multimedia purposes in general.

Aside from that, it’s the first entry into a – likely existing – new product line that, in my opinion, will feature OLED panels, improved overall technology (such as ray tracing capabilities) that just weren’t the priority when designing the Steam Deck. which also had to be cheap enough to be as accessible as possible. Another handheld for €1000+ would not have been able to lay a foundation for future revenue and thus improvements to the software, for which many people need the device for data, which is crucial for the further development of even more capable devices.

Ray tracing isn’t a meme, though. At first it seemed like a gimmick, but the range of possibilities that ray tracing opens up has been proven over time (Cyberpunk, older titles getting patches). DLSS is also something the Steam Deck would have benefited from. We have to hope AMD catches up there if Valve doesn’t plan to work with Nvidia instead.

OLED burn-in isn’t much of a concern anymore either. For PC monitors, there have finally been relevant releases, but they won’t catch up to the IPS panels there yet, but probably soon. However, an OLED panel will help drastically with multiple aspects on the Steam Deck. However, it would have been more expensive, which is probably why Valve hasn’t agreed to it yet. Understandable.

I got a turquoise Switch Lite for $90 that was in “as new” condition and it came with Breath of the Wild, carrying case and 64GB microSD card on top of the internal 32GB. I got it 4 days ago. NGL, I think I still like my PS Vita smart a lot more. This is my first Nintendo product since DS Lite in June 10, 2007. I’m just more of a Sony and Sega guy.

I’m still not selling the Switch Lite. Since when do I ever find a Switch Lite for $90 in perfect condition with BOTW? But this actually keeps me from getting a Steam Deck. I reserved another one last week, but I probably won’t respond to the email again. I find the Switch Lite too bulky. Now imagine SD? Plus, I’m getting too old for video games and turning 42 in December. I don’t care anymore like it did from 1988-2007.

I’ll get Super Mario Odyssey, Super Mario 3D World/Bowser’s Fury, and Mario Kart 8: Deluxe and I’m done. I still think the best Nintendo product ever was their Super NES. Most of the ROMs I have on my phone come from that console. Super Mario World is still my favorite Mario game, followed by 3. Then probably keep the Switch Lite in its case for months, just like my Vita slim.

So my little disappointment of a Switch saves me $400 to get a Steam Deck. I am aware that the Deck is much better. It can already emulate Switch. But bulky devices and video games just don’t interest me the way I did in my teens and early twenties. The most convenient solution is to play retro games on your Android smartphone with Bluetooth controller. Games are FREE. If you are bored of gaming, you can go to YouTube and surf the web. Easier to store them.

Ray tracing is a meme. Nobody needs either one. The Steam Deck is already a huge milestone in portable PC gaming. At the most I’d give it a 60Hz 1080p IPS display and the ability to use 2080 sized M.2 SSDs.

Technology is quickly depreciated and if you don’t have a good turnaround, you’re at a loss. I hope they either learn it the hard way and lose a lot of money or realize that and leave us alone because it’s not profitable to do.

Good news. I just hope this doesn’t turn into a PS5 fiasco, with scalpers buying them all and then charging an insane amount of money for them.
I already saw some Steam Decks in my country and they were asking 1200EUR for it (the 256Gb model).
