Grounded is a game where you are shrunk to the size of insects, and your survival playground is the dangerous backyard. With this beautiful premise, a huge map to explore, and tons of bugs to kill, the game is packed with things to do.

Now that the game is on PC, rest assured that there is a modding community out there that can further refine your Grounded experience. While not as robust as some other survival games like Minecraft, Ark: Survival Evolved, or Conan Exiles, Grounded’s library of mods includes some nifty little quality-of-life tweaks and some crazy cosmetic changes.

Disclaimer: Grounded’s 1.0 release on September 27 meant that many popular mods were broken at the time of writing this article. So please read through the description page and User Posts tab of the respective mods on Nexus to make sure they are working on the current version of the game.

8/8 Goodbye depth of field

Bye Bye Depth Of Field By Xxbuckhunter1999

While Grounded’s aggressive depth-of-field effect increases the fun of exploration and makes the map feel bigger, for many players the novelty wears off over a long run. Unfortunately, there is no depth of field slider in play.

And this is where this little mod comes in. You also get a tangible increase in frame rate and a lot less stuttering while the resource-intensive effect is gone. Be warned though, it may reveal some broken meshes and placeholder textures that weren’t meant to be seen.

7/8 No introduction

Who likes looking at the same startup screens every time they open the game? This mod removes the intro screens from Obsidian Entertainment, Xbox Game Studios and Unreal Engine and lets you dive right into the action.

6/8 More active mutations

More active mutations by FistMeSenpai

Grounded starts with two mutation slots, which you can upgrade to five with primary molars found all over the world. You may have already sensed that the base game’s five mutation slots are a bit restrictive.

The More Active Mutations mod comes with two options, one that changes the number of slots to eight and another that sets it to 35. Eight seems to be the sweet spot in terms of not feeling too constrained while not being too overwhelmed. However, we will not judge whether you use the second version of the mod and use all the game mutations to your heart’s content.

5/8 More BURG.L Quest Rewards

More BURG.L Quest Rewards from Sidiusz

If you found the default rewards for the quests offered by the friendly robot to be a bit on the disappointing end, then this mod will suit you. With four options to choose from (x2, x4, x6, x10), this mod multiplies the rewards you get from bug killing quests, crafting and analysis.

Depending on the version of the mod you choose, this can cut down on a lot of the game’s grind.

4/8 Better status effects

As tedious as they are to make, base game smoothies offer far too few benefits. This mod fixes the issue and increases the duration of the buffs you get from smoothies to five minutes from the default two minutes.

In addition, the mod also boosts the healing you get from bandaging and the venom damage over time.

3/8 Carbonated drinks

Carbonated drinks from Sidiusz

Every survival game has a cafeteria of sorts. And with how often you have to drink to stay hydrated, watching the same cafeteria must get boring.

This fun little mod replaces the canteen model with real soda cans. You can now finally recreate your Pepsi-guzzling bug killer to your heart’s content. Don’t worry if you’re not a Pepsi fan. You can choose from a total of eight versions to download.

2/8 Compass

Compass of Heilos

The exploration in Grounded is pure fun. Making good use of the large landmarks peeking over the giant blades of grass around you, you can easily navigate the backyard with some thought. This is a masterful game design that rewards the more observant players.

However, if you’re more of a fan of using the cardinal directions to navigate, this mod adds a compass to the HUD. If you’ve played Subnautica, you’ll feel right at home.

1/8 A new transport master

A new transport master by menv

So you harvested one blade of grass and now there are a lot of planks on the ground. Since the game only lets you carry five planks and stems at a time, carrying so many resources when trying to build a sizable base is exhausting.

A New Hauling Master mod increases the number of planks and steals you can carry to 50 instead of the usual five. However, the mod’s author cautions against getting into the water or entering photo mode while carrying things as the game has been known to crash.
