Getting started in Hearthstone is a relatively painless process. The modern game regularly offers incentives to keep playing and constantly offers new and interesting maps, mechanics and even modes. Going beyond those beginner steps is a little harder to do, though, because there’s just so much to do on a grander scale.
Choosing a class to learn is always a good idea, and Shaman is not a bad place to start. Understanding what cards are at your disposal is step one, and then building a deck is a pretty good second step. But how do you know which cards are good? That’s where we come in. We’ve put together a list of some of the best cards shamans can access right now.
There are far too many cards to list here, so we’ve picked a diverse selection of spells, effects, minions, and rarities. This is not intended as a guide to building a deck.
10/10 Bloodthirsty
Bloodlust is an absolute classic. Many decks over the years have used Bloodlust in a number of ways to supplement their decks. It’s also just a really easy card to understand, and gets exponentially better based on your board status. It can often be seen as a ‘win more’ card, but that’s just not the only way this card can be used. The only drawback is the cost.
9/10 Muck Polish
Moving on to something more modern, we have the Muck Pools. Muck Pools is one of the newest card types introduced to the game – Locations. Not all locations are good, but Muck Pools definitely falls into the “great” category. This is because it has a pretty stellar effect. Popping this down and being able to upgrade all your minions to a more expensive minion is excellent. Sure, it can give you something worse from time to time, but the playing potential with this card more than makes up for it.
8/10 Auction House Hamer
We like Auctionhouse Gavel because it has such an interesting effect that combos fit really well into some of the other maps the Shaman has access to. The stats aren’t anything fancy, but it’s also fairly cheap, making it a pretty good choice purely for the stats. Where it excels is the ability to make Battlecry Minions cheaper. This effect builds up when you get two swings, allowing you to level up to more powerful minions faster than most of your opponents.
7/10 Bolner Hamerbek
The successor of Auctionhouse Gavel is Bolner. This Legendary is very cheap at 2 Mana and has a health heavy statline. What makes Bolner great is its synergy with Battlecry units. With Bolner on the field, you’ll start repeating Battlecry’s every time you play Battlecry units. This can lead to incredible twists and turns and it pairs beautifully with Auctionhouse Gavel as it allows for those big Battlecry-heavy turns.
6/10 Order of Neptulon
Overload is an interesting mechanism that allows the shaman to produce very powerful spells and minions at a low initial cost. The trade-off is the “Mana Debt” you accrue. Having too many Overload cards can make your turns boring, but there are a few that are well worth the investment and Command Of Neptulon is one of them. 5 Mana to summon 2 meaty Elementals with Rush? Incredible value.
5/10 Wildpaw Cavern
Speaking of Elementals, Wildpaw Cavern lets you summon more for one low price. The downside is that you summon fairly weak Elementals, and for 4 Mana, your first Elemental isn’t really worth the price of admission. However, it takes about three turns? The value is very high. Remember, every Elemental also has Freeze, so they’re especially frustrating to kill in combat.
4/10 primeval wave
Primordial Wave is the great equalizer – or rather, it’s a complete crap shoot that usually works in your favor. Similar to Muck Pools where you randomly evolve a minion into a more expensive one, Primordial Wave does this for all your minions at once. Not only that, but it also affects your opponent’s minions and turns them into cheaper ones. The results of this card can be absolutely wild, but for the price it is excellent.
3/10 snow breaker
Any minion card you draw a card while playing is worth considering in any deck. Now Sleetbreaker doesn’t really draw cards, but it does have something similar by generating Windchill. Windchill is a great spell to chill in your hand, and Sleetbreaker is a pretty good 2 Mana minion in its own right. There is a lot of value in this card and it can probably find a home in most card games.
2/10 Firefighter Flurgl
We have stayed away from Murlocs so far. Shamans have always had a positive relationship with this ‘Race’, and while many Murlocs are neutral, Fireman Flurgl is actually a shaman card. For a low entry-level price, this man has a sturdy body and can wipe boards with its effect without much hassle. This card is a must-take in any Murlock deck.
1/10 Bru’kan of the elements
Cards that change your hero become more common as Hearthstone ages, but not all of them are worth taking. They were a bit slow at the beginning of the game. Bru’kan Of The Elements doesn’t have that problem. His battle cry is very powerful and your new hero power is a huge step up from Thrall’s already great Totem call. Taunt, Healing, Damage, and AOE are all rolled into one awesome map. Almost every Shaman deck should consider this card.
